Alert: Microsoft filtered by mistake the master key that allows skipping Secure Boot

in #technology8 years ago (edited)

Microsoft has revealed mistakenly filtered the security master key that will unlock any phone, PC or tablet that has Windows operating system and is protected by Secure Boot . This master key allow you to install malicious versions of Windows as well as software malicious or other operating systems on computers from Windows 8.1.

The main problem with this filter is that, although from the Redmond company are trying to fix, experts believe that the damage may be impossible to repair . At the moment, it is unclear what is the risk that this entails for users, although it seems that need physical access to the computer.

Secure Boot works level firmware , configurable in the UEFI (BIOS), having been designed to allow only an operating system with a certified Microsoft can load key. This master key seems to have been developed as a debugging tool internally the company, so that developers can test new versions. The key has been found dormant in some equipment offered for sale.

This type of rear doors developed by companies are a security problem in itself, because although the companies have for a legitimate use, in the wrong hands can be disastrous. In addition, can make it difficult to identify wrongdoers, what makes it even worse.

Is your OS already Windows 10? This is bad.
