New type of vehicle robbery! Watch this…

If you happen to have a sought-after expensive car, then your car is in danger!

The West-Midlands police in the UK released a surveillance video, which shows for the first time a new way of robbing cars, called “relay crime”. The robbers don’t phisically need the electronic key of the owner. Here’s how they do it…

They need two persons, each one with his own box, one for receiving and another for transmitting the key signal. The receiver box will receive the signal from the key (which the owner holds inside his house) and copies it to the other box, which transmits it to the car. The car’s system thinks that the signal came from the key and unlocks the car and the robbers can do whatever they want. It takes about a minute and then your car is gone!

Fact is that their boxes can only receive the signal through walls, doors and windows, but not through metal. I guess that a workaround would be to put your car-key in a metal box then…

The police itself recommends using a mechanical steering lock on the steering wheel, but that sounds a bit silly if you have a car of that-many-digits isn’t it? 😎
