Facebook has been in the news quite a lot recently because of their problematic privacy policy. There is so much data collection and analysis happening, data is sold and it is all about advertisers. Thereby I though it was time to write about some alternative social networks to free yourself from the Facebook's control.
- Diaspora
Diaspora is a social network that claims that you are in control of your data. They actually work with a system of decentralised pods so the data is not stored centralised. The site feels still fresh and in development, but privacy wise this is a great option. The features are similar to facebook.
Signal
Signal is a chat app similar to Whatsapp. BUT, signal is not owned by a big company and does not collect your data. Chat and talks are encrypted.Riot.im
Riot is a platform for online communication, secure calls. The great thing is that they easily allow to integrate with other apps.
Conclusion
The service that comes closest to Facebook's features is definitively Diapora. I'm really curious to see how this platform evolves! Google for *Join Diaspora to find the website.
