HOW 'I.P.' ADDRESSES WORKS ?

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

What is IP Addresses?

They typically look like this - 203.0.113.12
They are actually a single 32-bit number, though they are usually written just like the number shown above ; they are written in the form of for decimal number that are separated by dots . The numbers are sometimes called octets or bytes because each one represents 8-bits of the 32-bit number . As such , each octet can only take values from 0 to 255,so valid IP addresses range from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255 . This way of writing IP address is called dot-decimal notation.
You may have noticed that the network -connected devices that you use have IP addresses assigned to them . Each IP addresses that is assigned to a network device is unique and no to devices can share an IP addresses
There are two types of IP versions one is IPv4 and other is IPv6 which is new in market .

ASSIGNING IP ADDRESSES

IP addresses can be assigned to a device by a network administrator in one of two ways: statically , where the device's operating system is manually configured with the IP addresses , or dynamically , where the device's operating system is configured by using DYNAMIC HOST CONFIGURATION PROTOCOL(DHCP).

IP ADDRESSES ON INTERNET

The internet is huge IP network , and every device that sends data over it is assigned an IP addresses .
The IP addresses space is managed by an organization called the INTERNET ASSIGNED NUMBERS AUTHORITY(IANA) . IANA decides the global allocation of the IP addresses ranges and assigns blocks of addresses to REGIONAL INTERNET REGISTRIES(RIRs) worldwide , who then allocate address block to countries and organization . The receiving organizations have the freedom to allocate the address to assigned blocks as they like within their own network .
If you inspect the output of 'ip addr' or 'ipconfig/all' on your home network , then you will find that your devices are using private ranges , which would have been assigned to them by your broadband router through DHCP .

So , that's all for today , another time i will post some thing about IP packets and all.
