In 2006 the British construction company Atkins started building the InterContinental Shimao Hotel in Shanghai, but after eleven years it is still not ready. It is therefore a difficult and terribly expensive project: workers have to build nineteen floors in a deep ravine to get the effect of a reverse skyscraper.

Normally the hotel could receive the first guests next year, after an investment of no less than 386 million euros.
Drone images show that the construction of the InterContinental Shimao Hotel is finally gaining momentum. A team of 5,000 workers has been working on the building for eleven years, but the project is so difficult that there has been little progress for a long time. But in May 2018 the hotel can finally receive its first guests.
Floors under water
The hotel is located on a landscaped lake and the bottom two floors will be completely below the water surface. The complex has 370 rooms that only richer people will be able to afford. A night in the cheapest room will cost 230 euros. There is also a large swimming pool, a fitness room, various restaurants and conference rooms.
