Eyes-on: BlackBerry Key2 - Super phone that's not for you.

in #technology7 years ago

Hi fellow Steemians!

BlackBerry (yes, they still make smartphones) has announced the sequel to last year's Key One, the BlackBerry Key2. Let's take a look.

Specification

4.5-inch 1080x1620 resolution screen (3:2 ratio)
Snapdragon 660
64 or 128GB Storage
6GB RAM
3500mAh battery
Dual 12MP rear cameras (secondary telephoto)
8MP front camera (display used as flash)
Others: physical keyboard (can also be used as trackpad), speed key (allows quick access to 52 customizable shortcuts), spacebar doubles as fingerprint scanner.

Price and availability

Price starts at $649, will begin shipping later this month globally.

My thoughts.

Although I'm not a target audience for this phone, I am always tempted to get one when Blackberry announces a phone with physical keyboards. It's no different with this one. I really like the design, it retains the great features of last year's KeyOne and adds some needed improvements, such as dual camera, larger physical keyboards, etc.

One gripe I have is the price. For a phone with mid-range specs (although it does have
generous 6GB RAM), $649 is an absurd price. Yes, smartphone prices have generally risen in recent times, but still there are phones with better specs for almost half the price out there. But guess what. Like I said before, this isn't the phone for me.

This is a phone for those people who are always on the go, needing to type messages, emails or even edit documents. For those people, a touchscreen keyboard is a nightmare and a physical keyboard is a godsend. For them, this phone is pretty much the only phone that they can choose in the market and if you look at it that way, $649 doesn't seem like such an absurd price.

It's a super phone that can do anything (maybe not for watching media), but it surely isn't one for the mass market.
