Hello Steemians,
We are all able to interact on this beautiful platform majorly because of the the internet and then the blockchain, but there is an important element that renders all the techy and not so good looking code to something we can all interact with easily;the web browser. In this post, I check out the most used web browsers currently.
I used statcounter to get the data, they have amazing amount of data available on internet Stats
Top Browsers July 2017
I was able to get very recent data from statcounter, data as recent as last month
Browser | Market Share |
---|---|
Chrome | 54.3 |
Safari | 14.15 |
UC Browser | 8.57 |
Firefox | 5.73 |
IE | 3.74 |
Opera | 3.98 |
Samsung Internet | 3.53 |
Android | 2.47 |
Edge | 1.74 |
IEMobile | 0.34 |
Others | 1.45 |
You can see from the chart that Chrome is by far the most used web browser with a market share of 54.3%, Safari and Uc Browser round up the top 3 with 14.15% and 8.57% market share respectively . Interesting to note that Microsoft has two browsers in the top 10; IE, Edge and IE mobile. IE and IE mobile have been discontinued by microsoft but from the data, both browsers are still being used
Are you using the latest version ??
While data in the previous paragraph shows which browser has the largest market share, it doesnt specify what the version of that browser is. The importance of always having the latest version of any software you are using cannot be overemphasized, there has been a lot of ransomware attacks recently, the hackers tend to target users running older versions of software most times,so it is best to ensure that all your softwares are running on the latest version, a security bug might be in the older version and getting the latest version might be the only way to fix that bug. There is data available on market share of each browser version on statcounter. I am going to pick out 3 browsers for this analysis
Chrome
The latest version of chrome is Chrome 60 but you can see from the chart, chrome 60 is only installed on about 1% of the machines currently indexed by statcounter.A massive 19% of the machines are running on versions of chrome older than chrome 59
Safari
Safari has a very impressive 65% of users currently using the latest safari version (Safari 10.1) but there is still a substantial number of people (9%) using versions of safari older than Safari 9.0
IE/Edge
From the release of Windows 10, Microsoft developed a new browser that would eventually replace Internet Explorer completely but Internet Explorer 11 is still the most used version. Support for any version for Internet Explorer older than Internet Explorer 11 has been stopped so its frighteningly amazing a lot of machines are still using Internet Explorer 10 and other older versions

I'm shocked at the decline of the Microsoft Browsers, really shocked! I've been working in web development for nearly 20 years and it's only around 4 years ago we were still having to support IE 6 due to old internal steam powered systems running in our organisation.
Yeah its more shocking especially when you factor in the large market share Microsoft has for Operating Systems , they just seem unable to convince users to dump chrome for Edge.
yeah thats very good and informative one.. but i like to use Google Chrome..
Yeah most people do
I just use safari !!
Hope you enjoy using it.
I do so Doc..
Chrome rules :)
I kinda like Opera more
On mobile I use eSteem app thanks to @good-karma, while on desktop and laptop I prefer firefox!
Great, would probably try the esteem app,I noticed I cant view memos in my wallet while accessing steemit through chrome on my android mobile .

welcome, i am following you! give me the best @kunani
Samsung Internet is best of all imo, currently using it and is far better from others
That is cool , I have not tried it.
Nice info again @datageek.
Never used safari before. Strange to see it has such a high market share.
It would be nice though to know the most efficient of these top browsers, in terms of data management and compression, to save browsing data consumption.
Yeah I can check this out but opera with their renewed focus and investment in Africa tend to prioritize data management in the development of their browsers especially the mobile browser
What about Vivaldi ???
This browser has very very little market share currently
Chrome is so user friendly
It is and that has to be the goal of every single front facing app
I've switched to opera long time ago but still use chrome, wondering if brace can make the leap in the future 😎
Any major reason for your switch ?
👍👍👍👍
I think chrome has take the market also because of the google search engine or google itself , it's one of the titans in the web. great post!
Yeah but Microsoft has a large market share for operating systems and still cant get people to use their browsers, so the guys at chrome must be doing something right. Thanks for stopping by
Thank you for those stats, seems like chrome is way above the others. I mostly use firefox and at times chrome too. I like the features in firefox but it tends to crash especially if I open too many windows :)
sad to see Firefox fall so much. It's pretty much the only major browser that's completely open source. Chromium, from which Chrome is derived, is open source, but basically nobody uses it. Although i can see why a lot of people are leaving Firefox; Mozilla seems to have lost direction these days.
Seriously uc browser came before Mozilla?!
I toatally agree, I use chrome also, it's flexible with a lot of online stuffs
