The joke that H1B Visas Really Are

in #technology7 years ago

A company in Chicago posted a job looking for a developer.

Not just any developer though. One that required a H1B Visa.

This ad might make sense if it said H1B visa considered. It might even make some tiny tiny thread of sense if it stated a specific city they would like candidates to apply from due to a particularly well renowned university that was based there.

But given that none of these things are the case I'm going to say with absolute confidence that this is aimed at people trying to get to America who require sponsorship and once in the USA won't have the freedom to just jump jobs when a better offer comes along.

What's wrong with this you might say?

Well what's wrong with it is that it allows companies to re-enact the dynamics of the long-time banned indentured servitude. Companies doing this can offer a tiny salary that regular Americans couldn't afford to work for. They even get to keep the candidate on this tiny salary for years.

Immigrants and natives alike suffer when loopholes such as the H1B visa facilitate the wilful destruction of standards of living for working people. And, that's what this is! Nothing more, nothing less.
