#4 Daily dose of tech - Google Chrome extensions

in #technology7 years ago

I use Google Chrome probably 50% of my time. I'm not gonna say it's my favorite browser but I decided to use it long ago and haven't made a switch to other browser till now. What I really like about it is extensions. Of course also other browsers offer extensions but I'm gonna write down the ones I use in Google Chrome. Some of them are just for fun, others for productivity. Order is random.

1. Mercury Reader

The Mercury Reader extension for Chrome removes ads and distractions, leaving only text and images for a clean and consistent reading view on every site. If you're familiar with Safari reading mode that's the extension for you.

2. Unshorten.link

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/unshortenlink/gbobdaaeaihkghbokihkofcbndhmbdpd

With the Unshorten Chrome extension, any shortened link (such as bit.ly or t.co) you click on will be automatically expanded and analyzed for malware giving you a clear view of where the link is taking you. Unshorten will also automatically remove known tracking cookies from the URL.

3. Momentum

Replaces new tab page with a personal dashboard featuring to-do, weather, and inspiration while showing some of the most amazing pictures from the web.  Definitely one of my favorites.

4. OneTab

Saves up to 95% memory and reduces tab clutter. Whenever you find yourself with too many tabs, click the OneTab icon to convert all of your tabs into a list. When you need to access the tabs again, you can either restore them individually or all at once.

5. Hover Zoom

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hover-zoom/nonjdcjchghhkdoolnlbekcfllmednbl

Enlarges thumbnails on mouse over. Works on many sites (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Reddit, Amazon, Tumblr, etc).

6. Google Translate

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-translate/aapbdbdomjkkjkaonfhkkikfgjllcleb

Everyone knows Google Translate. Highlight or right-click on a section of text and click on Translate icon next to it to translate it to your language. Or, to translate the entire page you're visiting, click the translate icon on the browser toolbar.

7. Privacy Badger

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/privacy-badger/pkehgijcmpdhfbdbbnkijodmdjhbjlgp

Privacy Badger protects you from trackers as you surf the web. Privacy Badger blocks spying ads and invisible trackers. It's there to ensure that companies can't track your browsing without your consent. It also allows you to control how much access you want to give to the website you're visiting.

8. Ablock Plus

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/adblock-plus/cfhdojbkjhnklbpkdaibdccddilifddb

Choose to continue seeing unobtrusive ads, whitelist your favorite sites, or block all ads by default.

9. DuckDuckGo for Chrome

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/duckduckgo-for-chrome/bkdgflcldnnnapblkhphbgpggdiikppg

DuckDuckGo is the search engine that doesn't track you. Ever.

10. DF YouTube

Better experience for watching YouTube videos, no distractions.

Which extensions are you using? Do you use different browser? Comment under this post :)

Thank you... I will be using some of these, especially the tracker killers, I use TOR occasionally, but sometimes it is not suitable. But these sound to have almost everything that TOR does.

I also use TOR sometimes but found that those do pretty good job. Especially privacy badger, from time to time blocks even too much and then I wonder why some features on that page don't show :)

Kurator fits will in your list here. You can curate the links your work with and you want to keep, store them in list form in special folders and pin the folders in your browser. This way you can close your tabs without worrying about losing them. Accessing them is also a lot easier than OneTab, since you can organize them by topic. Take a look https://goo.gl/sNGQBp
