Slave New World
In today’s world tech is the master of distraction. Some people say tech distracts us from what is really important in life. Tech discourages people from really communicating with each other, involvement with tech leaves people no time to appreciate life, people want to own latest gadgets out of concern for status rather than need, and by making activities too easy, tech makes useful skills redundant. And some people say the otherwise. Let’s examine the pros & cons of this issue.
First of all, tech discourages people from really communicating with each other, to expand this point of view. People are enthusiastic to have quick entertainment.Mobile devices are great for this cause but it also distracts us from face to face talking and engaging with people. Some people think that “Who needs to meet new people? I have friends on social platforms. If i want to have new friends, it’s just a couple of touching to my screen. I can easily have new friends” this way of thinking is wrong for the people who say that tech discourages people from communicating. I’ll expand why they think this way by giving some examples. First of all,yes you can meet new people over the internet but can you develop a real, intimate relationship with these people? They ask.Secondly, upon living in this tech-based world it creates the illusion of people are closer than ever. Therefore you become isolated from the people around you because of the using of social platforms according to them.
Second big point they make is, using devices all the time distracts us from experiencing andobserving things around us,this lead to people becoming distant from each other. I have to give some examplesto shed light on the subject. First, nowadaysbasically living is not the most important thing; the most important thing is, according to some people, how many “likes” you got from a photo you post. If other people don’t give you “thumbs up” does it mean that you’re not important? They ask.People are comfortable than ever because of the rise of the technological devices. This brings us to explaining the second example furthermore. They don’t think being too comfortable is a good thing. If you are too comfortable,“leaving your comfort-zone to observe things around you” is almost impossible and others can manipulate, control and use you for their benefit, they think. Third example is both an answer for the people becoming distant from each other and people owning the latest gadgets for their status.Humans respect wealth and social positions. This leads to people wanting and buying the latest gadgets even though they don’t need it. They are basically wasting the money they hardly gain for an unimportant material object, supporters say. This actually creates an insincere relationship with people you’re engaging.Nonetheless this relationship is nothing more than showing off each other what they have, according to them. People argue that what others think about them is important. If the person you’re engaging is someone who can help you develop yourself, yes their thoughts are important. If they are not important for you hence their thoughts are not important too, say the supporters. So, last important topic is does tech makes useful skills redundant? For instancewith an additional part you buy that you can plug to your phone, you can even play instruments with your phone. But is it same as holding a real instrument with your hands? Does playing a rock band game with devices that are for the game, makes you an instrument player? Supporters of tech makes useful skills redundant sayit doesn’t. It’s just a game;playing real instruments are not easy and it takes a lot of your time only to hit some notes. You can’t do a guitar solo after you picked the guitar half an hour ago. Just like playing air guitar doesn’t make you a guitar player, playing some game with a replication guitar doesn’t make you a guitar player.
Some people talk against these. They say that with tech people are communicating and engaging with each other more than ever. They say that if people around you are not suitable for you, you can make friends that are from overseas. They talk against that it distracts us. Their argument for the matter is being comfortable and stress-free is really important for human health. They say that with being like this you can focus better.Third example’s opposite side is, people aren’t wasting money, and they are investing for an amazing device. It’s not an unimportant material object, opponents say. They say that, on the other end of the spectrum, a useful skill that only some people had is now something that a lot of people have according to opponents. It’s easier to improve your skills with the technological improvements.
In conclusion, the supporters of“tech distracts us from what is really important in life” say that with quick entertainment and with creating the illusion of having a so called real relationship over the internet, tech distracts us from what is really important in life. Opponents say it otherwise, they say that tech actually brought and showed us what is really important in life by showing us what is happening around the world. You listened to both sides, now it’s up to you to decide who is right and who is wrong.
I cannot quite agree with what you say. Your post would have been more truthful if you had said that tech CAN distract us from what is really important in life, but instead what you wrote reads like an assertion that tech ALWAYS distracts from what is important in life, and that simply is not true. Used wisely, technology can enhance quality of life, help us to maintain stronger friendships. Oh, and you can develop a meaningful relationship over the Internet, or at least in online worlds like Second Life. I should know, I have been in a very happy relationship for over a decade now.
I respect your point of view, I have had friendships over online and even met some of the people in real life too. Tech can be a tool for communication but it shouldn't be the communication itself. Talking to someone in real life is a more complex experience than talking someone over online, it is more "human" to talk somebody in front of you, with all of your senses can feel and know that person is with you.
