Stop blaming smartphones for your lack of photography skills

So, you're planning to get your Instagram career started for good. But this 100€ phone you've got is so horrible. So the only solution is to get the 1200€ loan and buy that Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or Huawei Mate 20 Pro, right? Then your Instagramer's career will kick off and this business investment will definitely pay off, right?

Take a moment to look at those photos:

Do you think they were taken with one of 2018 flagships? Or at least photography-focused mid-rangers from 2017?

Wrong!

They were taken with one of the cheapest phones of 2016 - Xiaomi Redmi 4A/5A (that at the time of release cost 100€ and some offers in 2017 were as cheap as 50€).

And don't get me wrong, this phone's capabilities are nowhere near iPhone Xs or Google Pixel 3. But take look at those photos:

All of them were taken with phones that cost more than 1200€, but the photos aren't spectacular. Don't get me wrong, theoretical capabilities of modern flagship phones are outstanding, but in the end it all comes down to the skills of the photographer.

So if you are a photography enthusiast with lot of money, by all means go out and buy the best that the world has to offer. If the adaptive aperture of Samsung Galaxy S9 camera is the thing you were missing in your shots, spend the cash you have in a way that will make your shots even better.

However if you are a beginner who is thinking about spending over a thousand Euros to see if mobile photography is something worth trying, that's probably not a good idea. If you've got the talent and are willing to put a little effort, your shots can look great even if taken by 50€ smartphone camera.
