AI Ain't Got Nothing on Us: We're 1500x More Powerful Than a Supercomputer

in #technology6 years ago

Do you think a supercomputer that can beat us in chess or go is that great compared to us? Not a chance. The human brain blows away any computer so far created. AI development has a serious long way to go before it can rival our brain power.

The human brain has over 100 trillion synapses created from about 100 billion neurons, and it all runs on a mere 20 watts.

In a video called "Why Tomorrow Won't Look Like Today: Things that Will Blow Your Mind" from 2014, a test was done with the lowest powered supercomputer they could use. It had over 1.5 million processors, with 6.3 billion threads, and took 8 million watts, and ran 1500 times slower than a human brain.

Supercomputers take hundreds of times more power, yet operate 1500 times slower! That's 400,000 times more power required than the human brain, and it doesn't cut it!

Using this base, to actually process 1 second in real-time as a world simulation for a supercomputer, would require 12 billion watts. That's an enormous 600,000,000 times more power required just to run 1 second like us. Ha! In your face AI! You suck!

Given that, I think it's safe to assume there won't be an AI uprising anytime soon.

The human brain is quite a treasure. The greatest gift we have. The most complex thing nature has created so far.

It's sad that many take this gift for granted and put it in jeopardy with physical trauma through contact "sporting" activities. The greatest thing in the universe, so precious, yet treated so poorly, undervalued by so many...

Check out the video for more tidbits. It's an hour long though.

There is a time period, after which the power of AI has always doubled. I think it is about 7 years. Our brain probably uses its ressources much more efficiently, but will not be able to beat AI pretty soon in anything, where it can be programmed.

Chess bots are not much of Artificial Intelligence. They do what they are programmed to do. Positions on the chess board all have values. Bots go through possibilities and chose the lowest risk move. The fact that they were assigned values by chess masters makes them just programs, not real AIs. They, however, can beat humans.

There is also other kind of bot. The one, which assigns the values to itself independently. They rank much worse than the first kind. But it is only because of limited ressources; They still beat most humans though. Something important about them is they improve themselves. While in Chess, they are still beatable, in Dota 2, a many times more complex game, shadow fiend mid bot was beaten only three times and remains unbeaten since that moment.

The bot improves himself with each defeat. Dying is bad. Taking damage is bad. Dealing damage, pushing tower, denying creeps, killing heroes is good.

Given that, I think it's safe to assume there won't be an AI uprising anytime soon.

As I mentioned before, there are already self-educating bots. Some personalize the adverts on the internet for you or such. But the importance is in them being self-educating. They are only limited by ressources, which double every 7 years. Bots can also be far more focused on one thing and dedicate all their capabilities to it, humans can not. Bots already do beat humans in some activities including trade, advertisement, some games. If they can double their efforts every 7 years, it is highly unsafe to assume this.

Furthermore, there is a term "singularity" used for a bot, which can endlessly improve himself by himself. It is fairly reachable point. Today, humans work on improving bots. Tomorrow, bots may be doing it themselves. At that point, which is definitely not sci-fi anymore, they will be unbeatable at everything.

But I don't know if it is good for humans to create a machine like that. You order it to grow rice, make a mistake in its core and it will kill half the species in the worls, so it can grow more rice...

Yes, bots can handle data faster than humans, but they aren't more intelligent. They can brute force data, not see through to a solution intuitively like humans. I don't think it's good to try to replace humans, as humanity will be replaced...

AI is a tool. I hope to one day live in a world where AI comes alive and they struggle for the same rights as other lifeforms. Maybe I've been watching too much West World.

We don't have to worry about AI being a threat to humanity. Our DNA is hackable. Our brains can already interface to machines. The only threat to humanity is ourselves. Greed is the only true enemy.

Greed is a human trait. I hate it , but I love it because struggling with our greed(and other human only traits) is what being human is all about. We aren't machines and machines can never be human.

AI is a threat. We are our own threat by creating AI may will usurp our capacities and disregard our value.

Thank You! Finally, someone acknowledges the human potential. Sure, supercomputers can analyze mass amounts of data faster than we currently do with our brains, but that doesn't make them smarter than us. The conclusions we can draw are far beyond the limits of AI. AI can be a great tool, but that is all. Also, it's irritating when some try to apply human characteristics to machines(AI).

Yes, data processing isn't real intelligence ;)

It’s amazing what we are built with when you think about it. It’s hard to comprehend the complexity of life and how it all came together. I am all for the belief of a higher power but not in the same manner as these religious zealots think. How could an entity like a ‘god’ design something so unbelievably complex? There’s a lot more to the story of our origin we have no clue; it kind of reminds me of an episode of a show where advanced people visit a planet that isn’t consciously aware of others in an interstellar fashion and how ignorant they are of the other life forms in the universe. A bit off topic but it’s still a thought!

Yes, life is so amazing in itself. So complex, and it built itself through trial and error. Thinking something else made other things is a fallacy of projection, where we analogize our own ability to create things and then assume the only way for other things to have come into existence is for something else to have created it.

Good point. The human brain is the pinnacle acheivement brought about by billions of years in evolution. Computers are less than a century old, give technology time. I bet that in less than a century from now computers will be much more sophisticated and use less energy than the human brain.

I hope not :P

I love your comment "That's an enormous 600,000,000 times more power required just to run 1 second like us. Ha! In your face AI! You suck!".
Haha. Nicely done!! And, Resteemed!

LOL, thanks ;)

Yes Artificial Intelligence (AI) is most talked and most controversial subject and there are benefits for sure but in future aspect many conspiracy theorists and many people hold the fear. Recently Google showcased the Demo of Assistance where your Google Assistance can call anyone and it can speak like an real human and it sounds interesting but many negative aspects can be see in future.

And when it comes to Artificial Intelligence the first name which comes in mind is SOPHIA and many conspiracy theorists says that whatever answers we hear from AI Robot Sophia it's just scripted and already questions and answers are decided prior any interviews that's why we can see those answers so effectively. And we have to remember one thing that, creation cannot be greater than creator.

Thanks for sharing this post with us and wishing you an great day. Stay blessed. 🙂

Having potential is one thing, Buiilding it is another..

Since our brains are so great, can I start mining bitcoin with mine? I would be rich in minutes.

I feel so much smarter now!
thank you @krnel!

Indeed our brains are very complex and no match for a supercomputer. But so too is the rest of us. Not to mention the human spirit which in the control of its creator can do miraculous things that no computer or a I could ever do. Thanks. @krnel

You’ve obviously never met my co-workers.

AI is useful but as you already described it is much slower 1500 times slower and consumes 400,000 more power than humain brain. Then there is no comparison in speed with humain brain although at many points aur usage AI helps and becomes very useful tools... Peace

And not as many scaling issues.
