Why Do People Still Prefer The Evil Google Over Duckduckgo?

The non-evil duck#

I'm a huge fan of https://duckduckgo.com and I now use it for all my web and image searches for Steemit, and I recommend you do the same too to protect your own privacy. But why do so many people still use the non-private evil Google? I think it boils down to four main reasons:

Source

1. Branding

Everyone knows Google, so they stick to what they like. They stick to the same bank account that they like just like they stick to the same washing powder.

'Google it' is probably the most used phrase in the English language at the moment, and is used in everything from 'Who was the last King of Scotland?' to diagnosing the latest aches and pains.

Duckduckgo is really only known by geeks and techies and has never really made the mainstream market. This is a shame as technically it's a super-fast search engine - faster than Google in my estimation.

2. The spelling

Yes, you guessed it. Duckduckgo is a pain in the ass to type compared to your quick and friendly Google, but with modern browsers, the autofill really takes care of the rest, so there is no real excuse here.

3. Google money talks

It's in Googles best interest to pay browser companies for the exclusive rights to be the default search engine of choice, which makes it a pain in the ass for people to change who are not technically minded. I myself have had to change it several times for my own family who like to use Yahoo! No converts there then.

4. Cool features are not enough

We know all know this well enough on Steemit. You can have the fastest and coolest features on the market, but if you don't have a rabid market niche of people, then things get tough pretty quickly. Duckduckgo stores no privacy information on you and is ultra-fast at searching.

A lot of people think Google is free, but it's not. It's constantly mining you for information to store away for itself. This is where a blockchain search engine could perhaps comes in, so privacy could be assured - this idea was touted by @blacktiger

Bottom $: Don't follow the rabid packs on Google. Just like you left Facebook to come to Steemit, do the same for your search engine browser too. Your browser will thank you for it I promise.

Steem on!

I am very happy using DDG. The future I like the most is the use of commands for searching in another search engines.

Maybe we can change the Steemit search engine to DDG?.

@ropaga - I like the idea of our own internal search engine WITHIN Steemit - one that is totally blockchain driven and private :)

@mindhunter, please tell more about this

It was an idea started by @blacktiger - check her blog! I'm gonna mention it in my Steemit Daily Dose vid soon, so keep an eye out for that too @marionjoe :)

thank you @mindhunter

Always a pleasure :)

greetings @mindhunter - could you please give me a boost for my intro post, to set the standard for me. as i have a lot of community building to do for us all, i would like you to give me the biggest help you can give me by upvoting, resteeming and following me. i have a smaill income so i do not need money, i need to spread the word, to up board the organic food growers who grow high quality low cost food for their communities.

you just reminded me to save this on the toolbar! thanks:)

Always a pleasure @doitvoluntarily ;)

I am duckduckgo long term user and I am very happy with that.

Me too @joananwatt - it really helps with my mood :)

I'm glad I read this post ☺️ I like to think of myself as tech savvy but then obviously not as much as I thought since I had NO IDEA this existed!! Ha cheers @mindhunter

Everyday for us something new on here @thereceptionist ;) P.S. Cool username!

yay duck duck go. i changed to duck duck a few months ago. and glad i did. not yet sure of the benefits ...

Good news @marionjoe - tell all your friends too :)

thank you for reminding me about duck duck go - here is the forum to find out more about easy privacy.

WOW! Cool ... thanks @marionjoe ... off for a browse :)

Google does offer some convenience and there's integration with their other tools if you use them. I don't consider them any more evil than other companies I use. It would be good to see them have more competition

I'd love to see a Steemit blockchain search engine integrated within Steemit replacing that darned Promoted section!

How would a blockchain search engine work? The web keeps changing, but a blockchain is more static.

It would guarantee the safety of the search via a fixed blockchain process that was immutable but completely private. Still whiteboarding this one after an idea by @blacktiger! I did mention it in my Daily Dose vid today!

I use both.

Your too clever @valtr ;)

I think the name DuckDuckGo & a logo of a duck would put people off. People may look at it & think it is a joke search engine

I think Marvel should create their own search engine to rival it, & call it Howard The Duck

The duck does look a bit geeky and jokey it must be said - that is why we need our own Steemit blockchain driven search engine ... Stoogle :)

thanks for the idea :D and duckhunter is very sweet, you will find a lot of fans :D

Maybe that should've been my username - I do love ducks - especially to eat! Ha ha! @crispyduckhunter :)

ehm that will not help your reputation, cow boy.

My reputation never moves anyway ... 68 ... 68 ... 68 ... 68! Ha ha!

since when?

1979!

a year before I was even born... and you were a toddler :D

Very helpful information,Thank you. If you use Firefox there's an extension Duckduckgo Plus :)

I use the extension in Firefox and the Chrome one too :) DDG everywhere!

Chrome also, cool. Steemit Quack on ;)

On top of what you said, we shouldn't remember that we humans are LAZY... and so we tend to stick with what we are used to use.

So why are you not writing this comment on Facebook? ;) Ha ha!
