Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 pro launched

At an event in Munich, Germany, Huawei launched the Mate 10 and the Mate 10 Pro smartphones today. At the launch event Huawei stressed a lot about how the smartphone is focused on heavy users. The company said that it understands how smartphones are now replacing computers, laptops and tablets. It has designed the Mate 10 and the Mate 10 Pro with a large screen in a compact body, fast processor, and a powerful camera.

The Mate 10 is priced at 699 Euros (Rs 53,400 approximately), whereas the Mate 10 Pro has been launched at 799 Euros (Rs 61,000 approximately). Both will go on sale starting the beginning of November 2017, in Australia, China, Egypt, Malaysia Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, UK, Netherlands, Norway, Chile, Denmark, UAE, and a few more countries. Sadly, India isn’t in the first wave countries where the smartphones will be released.

As the names suggest, the Mate 10 Pro is the larger variant of the Mate 10 smartphone. The Mate 10 features a 5.9-inch 2K HDR RGBW QHD display with 16:9 aspect ratio, whereas the Huawei Mate 10 Pro comes with a 6-inch 4K HDR RGBW display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The Mate 10 Pro has a screen-to-body-ratio of 81.7 percent, whereas the Mate 10 has screen-to-body-ratio of 81.6 percent. Huawei says that the size of the device has been design such that it offers a large screen but is also very comfortable to keep in the pocket.

At the back, for better grip, the smartphone features a combination of 3D curved glass and metal finish, and the sides gently curve towards the edges. Huawei also compared the Mate 10 duo with the new Apple iPhone 8 Plus, stressing on the similar size the three offer, yet the larger display the Mate 10 Pro and Mate 10 features in the same space.

Under the hood, the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro is powered by the new Kirin 970 chipset, which the company says is the world’s first chipset to integrate artificial intelligence (AI). The Kiri 970 has four Cortex A73 cores clocked at 2.36 GHz and four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. It is paired with Mali G72 12-core GPU. Richard Yu claims that Kirin 970 has made their smartphone 20 percent faster than their competitors like iPhone 8 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 8. While the Mate 10 comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage, the Mate 10 Pro has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. It runs Android Oreo-based EMUI 8.0, which it also says is AI-based.

Further, Huawei says that while the iPhone X with its Face ID still involves three steps to unlock, which is raise the phone, look at it, and then swipe it, the Mate 10 duo involved a single step, wherein the phone unlocks in just 0.33 seconds, with its fingerprint sensor at the back.

For photography, the smartphones feature Leica powered dual-camera setup on the back, accompanied by an LED flash. On the front is a single camera. Huawei says, what is an Intelligent Photography, where the cameras are supported by an AI-engine. Both smartphones sport a combination of a 12-megapixel RGB sensor and a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor at the back, which the company claims has the world’s largest aperture – a dual f/1.6 camera lens. The cameras feature Optical Image Stabilization and 4-in-1 hybrid focus. The front camera has something called AI selfie, AI Zoom and a bokeh mode.

Huawei also announced that the Mate 10 Pro is IP67 certified, which means it is dust and water resistant. Though company’s CEO Richard Yu says that he is confident that its device will do better than IP67 against dust water. The smartphones come in a Blue, Pink Gold, Black, and a Champagne Gold color. The battery fuelling the two smartphones is also massive, with both being powered by 4,000mAh one, which is supported by ‘super fast charging’, which it says is four times faster than wireless charging. For connectivity, it has 4.5G LTE, and world’s first 4G dual VoLTE. Mate 10 series also feature AI accelerated translation, which the company says is 300 percent faster than other translation apps. Huawei Mate 10 Porsche Design – Specifications and Features
Additionally, Huawei also announced the Mate 10 Porsche Design at the event, which has currently the maximum space any Huawei smartphone offers, which 256GB. The device otherwise is essentially same on the inside, but Porsche Design has done a bunch of changes on the outside of the device. The body of the phone is encased in a more luxurious design. It is priced at 1,395 Euros (Rs 100,000 approximately).

Also, similar to Samsung’s Dex, Huawei launched a PC Mode, wherein, when the Mate 10 series smartphones are synced with a bigger screen, the smartphone can be used as a touch pad. The two, which is the phone and the larger screen, can also be used as independent screens. Which means if your phone rings in between of the presentation, which is synced to your smartphones, it will not appear anywhere other than your device.

Android and Google VP also made an appearance at the event announcing the Mate 10 series being the first flagship to come shipped with Android 8.0 Oreo. He also announced that Google’s Neural Network API will be rolled out to the Mate 10-series smartphones by early next year.
