The US government wants to finance the ISS only until 2025

2025 is final: The US government under President Donald Trump wants to entertain the ISS only until 2025. Technically, the space station could remain in space until 2028.

There is no longer an extension: If it goes to the government of US President Donald Trump, the mission of the International Space Station (ISS) is not extended again. She wants to stop funding the 2025 station.

This is clear from the draft budget, which the Trump government wants to present to Parliament next month, reports the US online news service The Verge . The journalists were able to see the draft.

Congress reviews the draft budget

The draft budget is due to be submitted to the US Congress on February 12. That could be changed until then. However, two informants told The Verge that this point should stay in there. The two chambers must examine the draft and agree with it.

The original plan was for the ISS to remain in space by 2020. In 2014, the partners involved in the station decided to extend the mission by four years until 2024 . Implicitly, however, they assumed that the ISS will be operated until 2028. Technically, this is possible.

What do the partners think?

But that is not yet decided. However, it is feared that Trump's draft budget would signal to partners that the US was not interested in operating the ISS until 2028.

The ISS is currently the only outpost in space. There are no concrete plans for a Western successor yet. China is building its own space station, which will be in space in 2022. The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is planning to build a space station in a lunar orbit that could be completed by 2023 - assuming the project is funded
