1982 was the first time ever the concept of Internet of Things, also known as IoT, was proposed, and back then it was considered nothing more than wishful thinking. Now fast forward 34 years and suddenly this is a reality we are living. As this is becoming a reality, it holds promise to bring with it a whole new universe of opportunities in technological fields.
What exactly is the Internet of Things?
The Internet of Things is an idea in which almost every element of our lives – devices, network, humans etc. – has a unique identifier and also, has the ability to communicate over the internet. The aim is to create a scenario in which we do not have to control every single piece of equipment separately and instead have complete control over all your devices in a complex chain of integrated events, an ‘army’ of interconnected devices that through the internet communicate with each other and us.
The Internet of Things combine’s several different other technologies, ranging from cloud computing to big data to use of video and the increasing important use of mobile applications compared to traditional computer applications. This process of shifting to the internet of things is an evolutionary one and big companies to single individuals have already started experimenting and working on it.
Kevin Ashton, the executive director and cofounder of the Auto-ID Center at MIT said,
“Today computers-and, therefore, the Internet-are almost wholly dependent on human beings for information. Nearly all of the roughly 50 petabytes (a petabyte is 1,024 terabytes) of data available on the Internet were first captured and created by human beings-by typing, pressing a record button, taking a digital picture or scanning a bar code...
The problem is, people have limited time, attention and accuracy-all of which means they are not very good at capturing data about things in the real world... If we had computers that knew everything there was to know about things-using data they gathered without any help from us-we would be able to track and count everything, and greatly reduce waste, loss and cost. We would know when things needed replacing, repairing or recalling, and whether they were fresh or past their best."
Remember how as children the technology we saw on The Jetsons fascinated us. Imagine an oven/cooking unit that can automatically cook you a meal with a simple voice command or even start prepping your dinner as you informed it that you are on your way home, sounds futuristic, right? Well it could very well be a reality. In fact, you can look at the current times and see some amazing examples of the work companies and individuals have put into this technology already. Companies like Microsoft and The Raspberry Pi Foundation are working on creating newer and better single chip boards that enable us to combine and control all of your devices using nothing but our smartphones. If you do a simple search on YouTube, you will find quite a lot of people who have already implemented the Internet of Things in their homes and offices.
Although still in its infancy state, the future is bright for this technology and this could very well revolutionize our world. Now that is something to think about!
We live in a very exciting time. thanks for sharing
