Hello friends of sttemit, I share some information published in the newspaper the trade of Spain. I think the initiative is good and therefore the public pointing to the source. I hope it is pleasing.
A team of the UPV developed a system that learns to translate between two languages without human intervention
The Spanish researcher Mikel Artetxe and other engineers from the University of the Basque Country (UPV) have developed a translator based on unsupervised learning, which is known as "machine learning".
"He simply takes a text in one language, another different text in another language and the system learns to translate from one to another by himself," says Artetxe to Teknautas the Confidential.
The specialist explains that it is as if someone could learn the equivalences between words of two different languages from two books, without the help of a dictionary or a large number of texts, as with Google Translator.
"This, which seems impossible for humans, is totally feasible for a computer," adds the researcher.
For now, the system only serves to translate texts. According to Artetxe, his creation could in the future work with voice and even with images.
For Núria Bel, from the Institute of Applied Linguistics at Pompeu Fabra University, the direction taken by the UPV team is positive. "In any natural language processing system, not relying on supervision and improving learning and generalization techniques trying to reduce the need for data is always a good line of research."
