Apple possibly slowing down own products for monetary gain. New research shows that Apple may actually be deliberately slowing customer devices down in order to encourage the purchase of new Apple products. A study performed by student Laura Trucco at Harvard University produced some pretty interesting results. A graph was produced showing on average, customer's iPhone's slowed down significantly just prior to Apple releasing its newer versions. The graph shows that this is a trend that has happened not just once, but consistently over the span of many years.
Too coincidental to be merely chance. Further, a graph showing Samsung Galaxy's phone speeds just prior to new Samsung phones being released does not tell the same story.
Many have speculated that Apple could, in fact, be purposefully sabotaging its own devices for business. Catherine Rampell of the New York Times has suggested that Apple could be purposefully designing newer updates to function poorly with older devices. Rampell explained, "When major innovations remain out of reach, and degrading durability threatens to tick off loyal customers, companies like Apple can still take a cue from the fashion industry." It wouldn't be difficult for Apple to simply modify its devices aesthetically while keeping everything else within the device largely the same. They then go on to promoting their newer "cooler" looking devices into the mass media, hopefully pressuring people to keep up with the latest trends.
