Technology is wonderful, but the applications can be scary. New software can tell gay people from straight with much higher accuracy than humans. Computers are just good at detecting patterns and machine learning has really taken off in recent years. You can take a vast set of data, e.g. from dating sites, and the computer analyses it for patterns.
What the computer does not do is to judge people. That is a human trait and it's unfortunate that people are judged on their personal preferences. Whether that is genetic or by some other cause is not so important. There are fears this technology could be used to 'out' people who have chosen not to go public and to discriminate in various situations. It's not 100% accurate, so there would be false positives that could cause issues.
People should be judged on how they act towards others and not by anything they happen to be born with.

We usually quickly judge people by the way they look, but we often wrong
Well, I don't see how the computer can know, however, it does everything else. Almost so I agree with you on the false positives. The computer may become the judge one day, who knows.
Computers can spot patterns that we cannot. If you read the article it says it picks up on facial features, but also on hair styles etc. If there is a genetic aspect then that may be detectable in the face. I would worry more about human prejudice. Why hate someone for something they cannot change?
Jesus! That is scary stuff indeed. We are heading into unchartered territory here and one it seems we are just going to have to get used to.
The technology will march on regardless. We will have to cope with it
No argument there.
The advancement in technology is just amazing my friend! It is surely wonderful to see all the development brought forward thanks to it, but i'm still a little scared of what more will come... We have seen robots taking up human job for example which is good to see on one hand but sad that so many will lose their job!
In theory this should free us from work, but it needs to be for the benefit of all and not just the few.
Give technology enough time, and we will have to wear tinfoil hats and masks to preserve a little bit of privacy.
From theguardian:
That is quite funny the gaydar is actually a real thing now......
I had a fake gaydar app on my old Palm. Technology has caught up
well in upcoming time artificial intelligence will overtake all of it
Computers will get smarter. We won't
And to be honest that is fucking ridiculous. LOL I am laughing out loud just thinking that someone thought that would be a good idea and a real thing. Sometimes People can't even understand themselves how an analyses of Your data will understand and categorise a Human being. LOL That is such big bullshit.
It's all just data. People are trying to find the limits of what you can analyse. It's still up to humans to decide on how to use it. The same sort of technology can spot medical conditions. It's just a different set of data to the computer.
Still don't think it is useful. How can the fact You think You are sick and research a lot about that show that You are actually sick LOL see what I mean. Unless their market will be hypochondriac People! LOL Still can't see an useful use of it.
Lots of stuff done with computers isn't useful, but people are curious.
that is true
Statistics can provide very interesting information. With current amount of data available in the Internet, data collection is almost free, the only cost is to create an algorithm that analyzes the data. In this case the application is useless , but for example imagine a program that analyzes skin pictures looking for skin cancer. That would allow a much faster diagnosis, which is crucial for treating cancer.
I completely agree with you @steevc, as the Bible says "Do not judge and you will not be judged"
The Bible encourages to commit crimes against people that do not obey their obligations. Fortunately, an overwhelming majority of catholics reject the use of violence. About sexual orientation it is very specific:
Leviticus 20:13
"If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act. They must both be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense." (NLT)
I meant the earthly court, and before God everyone will answer for their sins.
Loving people isnt a sin, not that sin exists anyway, but you get the point.
I believe that by that time the machine can tell if a person is gay or not nobody will be paying attention to the that fact anyway :-)
Well the technology is already ahead of attitudes
Which i find a little but weird to be honest.
It is already very close.
The false negative (telling a gay person is straigth) chance is really low. The false positive on the contrary is higher. Considering 5-10% people are gay, at least 50% of man targeted as gay will be straight.
While the trend of LGBT rights and respect in most of the western world is promising, the situation in Asia and Africa is much different, and I fear this will take decades to change.
Oh, now i see where you are getting. The Witch hunt....
posts that have provided information about the technology. thank you for sharing friends
