5 Incredibly Outdated Technologies That Are STILL Used Today! - History of Tech - Part 12.

in #technology7 years ago

Even though technology has advanced a lot in recent years, there are still people that use old and outdated technology.

As technology has improved, we have moved away from analogue and moved into the realm of digital. Even DVD and Blueray collections have all but gone because now we can just stream anything we want for a lot less. The same with Games, we just simply buy online and download them. But regardless, there are still more than a few people that use old and outdated technology.

Here is 5 Outdated Technologies that are still being used today.

5 - Windows XP.

Windows XP was the first operating system in 2001 that utilized the then new 64bit hardware that AMD were making. But a few years ago, Microsoft stop all support for this Operating System with no further security or driver updates for it, leaving it wide open to attack.
Despite this, many shops across the world still use XP for all its point of sale tills, and over 80% of ATM's still use the operating system for all its banking transactions, and in countries like Russia, USA, UK and Germany, hackers have taken advantage of this by remotely or wirelessly hacking into the ATM, basically make it give away money.
There are also a good number of people with older hardware, still running XP on there own personal computers, while hackers wont specifically target those people, they are at a higher risk of attack because there is no longer any support for the ageing operating system.

4 – CD and DVD's

Once there were cassette tapes and VHS tapes that held our precious music and films. They were soon replaced by the compact disc and digital video disc. The music quality was better and films looked much better. Then came along MP3 players and Blueray disc's, you could now have quality music, and as many songs as you wanted on one device, and Blueray offer a high definition alternative to the DVD.
Now everything is either streamed or downloaded onto a number of devices from PC's to TV's to Car's. But regardless, there are still more than a few people who still have a DVD player to watch films, have a large CD music collection that is either kept at home or is taken with them in a car, and then there are the people who still have an optical drive in there PC, and store files on disc.
If you go into any PC shop, they will still be selling stacks or 100 blank discs, and any entertainment store, they will have a CD and DVD area. But with such a limitation on storage capacity and lack of quality, there are still people out there that will use them, knowing there is a better alternative.

3 – Phone Books.

With there being more mobile phones than toilets in the world (seriously It's True.) its hard to imagine that anyone will need a phone book, as the majority of these phones are smart ones that can connect to the internet to look up numbers online, or use a computer to look up a number.
Although the phone book has shrunk in size, it is still being used by a great number of people, they are of an older generation, but they prefer it to looking online.
The phone book used to be delivered to your door once or twice a year, and the companies whose numbers appeared in there, paid for the book. Now with many companies advertising online, the book has subsequently shrunk, but there are still companies who still advertise in there and it still does get delivered at least once a year in certain areas.

2 – Typewriters.

Now that almost everyone has access to a computer with a keyboard, typewriters are basically obsolete.
But regardless there is a growing trend of digital typewriters among a select few who have an appreciation for older tech. Many of them are a traditional typewriter that have been converted to digital, and thusly act like a keyboard. Some select keyboard manufacturers offer typewriter style keycaps for mechanical keyboards, and some keyboards take the look of a typewriter and put it into there keyboards.
Even so, writers and authors prefer the tactile feel and simplicity of a typewriter when they are writing a novel or non fiction book.
Governments such as the US, Russia, China and India, in certain departments all use typewriters as they present a unique security measure for sensitive or classified documents.

1 – CRT TV's and Monitors.

LED flat screens, LCD flat screens, Plasma flat screens, OLED flat screens, 60hrz, 120hrz, 240 hrz, HD, UHD, 4k, 8k..... there is basically a flat screen to suit everybody, and they range in size and prices from as little as $50 for one.
Despite this, there is still a great number of people around the world who are still using the giant and heavy CRT TV's. Many of which who still have this type of TV are typically the type of person who will only replace something if it breaks or stops working, and want to get there monies worth out of there stuff.
Just like some other dated technologies, it is generally the older generation who tend to have a CRT, I know my gran still has one, complete with a DVD and even a VHS player to go with it. And it still works flawlessly. She had that thing since before I was born. 40 years plus, and the same trusty TV that only had 4 channels and 2 SCART sockets, is still going. As my gran would say, they don't make them like they used too.
The same can be said about users who have older PC's and still have a CRT monitor, and they weighed so much more than a regular CRT TV. Many companies, garages in particular will still use a CRT monitor for diagnostics for several tests from smog to engine problems and wheel alignment tools.
Many professional gamers actually prefer to use CRT monitors because there is much less input lag, when compared to flat screen monitors, if you have ever seen an eSports event, you may have noticed that some of the competitors use a big CRT monitor, instead of a flat screen.
Even though these types of TV's and monitors are vastly outdated, there is no argument that they do indeed last much longer than today's offerings. And if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

While many of us will take a new technology on and discard the old, there are more than a few out there that will hang on to what they have a little longer for a number of different reasons.
I for one was using windows 7 up until last year when I made the switch to 10. the main reason was I didn't like the start menu and administration settings that windows 10 had, I was too used to windows 7, and it was still being supported by Microsoft, so I stayed with it. I made the switch when I found out there was a black version available that included the original control panel and I found a program called ''Start is Back'' which replaces the windows 10 start menu with one that has the same look and feel as the windows 7 one. I have had a few hiccups because of windows stupid updates, but I am happy I made the switch. Others would still be on XP... oh wait.....

what old technologies do you still use?

Thanks for reading.

yes sir @techmojo you are right. we are in ahe age of modern science. The science made our life easier. You posts are so informative sir. share more and more sir. i am a fan of you sir.

will do buddy ;-)

i hope your best of the luck sir

Typewriters are probably the most amazing thing on this list because most of it is just stuff we're stuck with due to lack of money/effort. They still make typewriters and they're not cheap. A new one is around couple hundred USD.

Another incredibly old thing people still use today is the old manual push mowers that just have 4 blades and no motor. Which is about the same prices of a push mower with a motor.

Personally, I just don't understand how there is a market for either product when there are so much better alternatives

fully agree there dude.

Thanks you my post
