Police in Japan's Kanagawa Prefecture have announced their intention to develop a "smart and revolutionary system" capable of predicting the location and timing of crimes before they occur based on artificial intelligence, Tuesday, February 27, 2018.
According to local newspapers, the new system will be tested by 2020, specifically with Tokyo hosting the Olympic Games. The system is expected to rely on analysis of more than 1 million crimes and about 800,000 incidents in the past.
The data will include gender and age of involvement in these crimes and incidents, as well as detailed information on the manner and circumstances of the crimes, as well as the weather and features of the crime landscape, such as the areas and buildings associated with the crimes.
The provincial police are using an advanced system that explains the locations and times of accidents and crimes during the day, in order to help them identify the places most in need of security patrols.
