Drones That Have Taken The Technology Stage By Storm
In recent times, we have experienced a good number of steady proliferation of drones not just for the amusement of tech geeks but for business and professional applications. As indicated by the Federal Aviation Administration, autonomous drones, or drones not being piloted or manned will see a 300% increase in sales over the next three years, this sharp spike will, of course, be propelled by the new enhancements being added due to technological improvements and innovation.
The 2017 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) was an indication of what to expect in the year as a lot of exhibitions in new drone technology were carried out. Three distinct segments could be observed at the show which includes Personal selfie drones, racing drone applications, and drones for business and industry. It could also be noticed that drones produced in 2017 have experienced tremendous changes in appearance and movement as compared to drones produced in 2016, with sizes scaled down, inclusion of self-controlling features, and VR applications
Autonomous Drones
A new upgrade to drone features is the ability to “see” using technologically enhanced sensors. This new spec of drones has the ability to observe the surroundings and avoid crashing into objects or obstacles. All this new modification sprang up in 2016 and will most likely be more prevalent in 2017. This newly improved vision ability of drones will help to navigate through hazy or misty weather conditions with backup systems that will still, however, provide visual sensing in the event of vision failure.
Some drones now come equipped with high definition cameras with which can ultimately be used to create a 3D image of the surroundings. The new sets of drones produced in 2017 also have te capability of storing images on memory chips and at the same time subsequently, recall positions of objects and obstacles so as to chart a flight path that could avoid obstacles.
However, some other drones produced in 2017 comes with high definition cameras facing all directions (front, back, up and down), giving the drones with this kind of specification the flexibility of taking a full picture of its environment which in the long run helps the drone to chart an improved flight path.
The incorporation of image processing software and machine learning with artificial intelligence might also in a way help to increase the safety and ease with which drones could be flown. We are also optimistic that drones that will be manufactured in the future will become more autonomous and might not necessarily be needing pilots for and navigation. Also, with all the navigation, vision and control features listed above and coupled with technology that takes care of security to prevent hacks and overrides will, of course, have to be included for security reasons.
There are also rules, regulations, and waivers which guide and control the use of drones both by the general public and industry. These set codes and guidelines on how drones are to be used helps prevent unsafe applications and malicious intent by hijackers making it easier for people to design and use drones within reasonable limits, some of these rules include:
- A maximum height of 400 feet above which a drone must not be flown,
- Drones cannot be flown outside of the field of vision of the drone pilot
- An individual cannot fly an autonomous drone without obtaining a pilot’s license.
Possibilities with drones
In recent times, there have been efforts to commercialize drones and bring them into the business world which in some areas has suffered has experienced little setbacks. However, the following under listed industry has shown enormous possibilities.
Drones in Industry
Some folks in the industry are beginning to make use of drones to optimize their operations. A good example of this is the aviation industry where drones are now being used to inspect airplanes for faults and anomalies, drones mounted with cameras fly around the plane, capturing images which can be evaluated using sophisticated computers.
Another industry with great possibility is the photo industry where aerial photo shots can be taken by drones, say Mountains or other natural landmarks without having to get in a helicopter. The construction industry also uses drones to carry out structural tests on buildings to ensure stability, the oil and gas industry also found a use for drones in pipeline inspection and downhole observation. Search and rescue missions also utilize drones in searching for bodies or aircraft parts on the seas.
Photography and Selfie Drones
The desire to capture every remarkable moment in movies has been taken a step further with the advent of drones in taking selfie pictures, selfie sticks will soon be made obsolete with small-sized drones that can be controlled with a smartphone app and take high-resolution images including features like face recognition and gesture control.
Drones for Racing Competitions
With the fast pace of innovation in drone technology, we might as well soon have a ‘formula one’ competition for drones, fast drones with speeds up to 100 mph are available for purchase with the racing experience provided in real time- Virtual Reality mode, the user can virtually “accompany” the drone as it flies and races against other drones.
You’ve definitely realized that drones are the future in technology and we await more innovations and greater capabilities in 2017 drones.
