Huawei announced at the IFA 2017 event the start of a new era in innovation in high performance mobile phones. Company CEO Richard Yu shared with the company's vision of the future of Artificial Intelligence with the new Kirin 970 processor.
Huawei presented the future of Artificial Intelligence at IFA 2017
The new top processor combines the power of cloud services with the speed and responsiveness of native processing offered by Artificial Intelligence. Huawei brings to life the experience of using Artificial Intelligence and changes how users interact with their devices with the new mobile processor model.
*"As we look at the future of smartphones, we realize that we are on the brink of a new era. Huawei is committed to turning smart devices into smart devices by building capabilities that support the coordinated development of Cloud processors, devices and services. The ultimate goal is to provide a significantly better experience for Huawei users.
Kirin 970 is the first step in a series of new breakthroughs that will bring on our phones major Artificial Intelligence specifications designed to outperform those of competition. "* - said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group.
Intelligent Artificial Intelligence in the Cloud
After years of development, Cloud AI technology has expanded its applicability, but in terms of user experience, there is still room for improvement, including optimization, stability and security.
Cloud AI and On-device AI can complement each other, On-Device AI (Intelligent Artificial Intelligence in Device) provides powerful detection capabilities, specifications that are the foundation for understanding and assisting user behavior. Sensors process a significant amount of real-time data that records specific scenarios and detects the owner's usage habits. Supported by powerful processing capabilities, smartphones will become more "aware" of user needs, providing truly personalized and affordable services.
Kirin 970 is the first mobile platform dedicated to artificial intelligence
The new Huawei chipset, Kirin 970, is the first AI mobile platform that integrates a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU).
The chip is built using an advanced 10nm process, "packing" no less than 5.5 million square-square transistors. It is powered by an 8-core processor and a state-of-the-art 12-core GPU. Equivalent to a Quad-core Cortex-A73 CPU, the Kirin 970 processor delivers up to 25 times more performance with 50 times more efficiency.
Thus, in a benchmarking test based on image recognition, the new Kirin 970 processed 2000 images per minute, which means it was faster than other chipsets on the market. New developments in Artificial Intelligence require a joint effort from the entire industry, involving tens of millions of developers and feedback from hundreds of millions of users. That's why Huawei places Kirin 970 as an open platform for Artificial Intelligence, opening up the processor for partners and developers who can find new and innovative features for their processing capabilities.
