Ecosystems are like the economy. Very sophisticated gears, with infinite pieces to which more delicate. If one part fails, more connections could go to waste, and the fragile house of cards would fall apart in a heartbeat.
In the last 30 years, 76% of the world's insects have said goodbye. They have become extinct, without even leaving a farewell note. The music does not stop and, far from the end of the party, the bichejos are extinguished at a rate of 2.5% per year.
Scientists speculate that at that rate in 100 years they may disappear from the world map.
Other species are bottom runners, and sweat the shirt until they reach the end of the road, which is in definitive extinction. Insects, paired with plants, have the advantage of being sprint runners, and therefore both double the normal extinction rate.
There are those who think that these bugs do not matter to anyone: caterpillars, grasshoppers and bees can go for a walk, and thus let us enjoy nature. They can think what they want, but as happens in the engine of a car or an economic system, the failure of a component breaks up with other elements of the chain.
If the score of death continues to play, its chords will also reach us humans. Insects add 17 times the total biomass of mankind, while they pollinate most plant species thus playing a leading role in agriculture.
Without them, productivity plummets.
If we want our green fields, rich and fertile, to continue with the food muscle that has been worked these centuries, we must take care of these small beings; Allowing them to maintain a comfortable symbiosis with life is the only way man has to save himself.
