The energy waste is my biggest gripe with cryptocurrencies. Globally we cannot afford to waste that energy for realistically nothing. Can you explain me why STEEM is better in that regard? Because it takes less mining per transaction?

Steem is not a mineable coin, there are no warehouses filled with computers mining steem. On the steem blockchain, there are witnesses, which are similar in a sense to supernodes - which oversee the creation of blocks and the witnesses have big awesome computer rigs, but it in no way comparable to coin mining. Its not even comparable to google or facebook, because the information is not stored on a centralized server. The witnesses oversee the creation of blocks and transactions on the blockchain, eliminating a HUGE waste of energy. I still like bitcoin, because it paved the way, but I see steem as a very intelligent evolution.
Okay, thank you very much for the detailed explanation. Found some guides on how to mine so I was confused, but it seems that has been disabled now. One more reason to support STEEM, just came here to push an alternative to youtube but like it more every day.
