Last week my friend Jackie and I visited our favourite local coffeeshop where we live in northern Thailand.
After a long arduous walk in the sweltering heat, we arrived at the coffeeshop to find that a new dessert was available. It was…Durian Cheesecake. It looked amazing…
Of course, we had to try it – it was a cheesecake after all… and of course Durian is the Pearl of Thailand. …so precious to the locals…
The Barista was a trifle skeptical when we ordered it. In her defense, she did warn us that it possibly would not suit the tastes of foreigners, but still…we had to try it. After all, Durian is the Pearl of Thailand…
We were served the most amazing coffee. And then, the moment of truth – the Durian cheesecake arrived.
It looked awesome.
For Jackie, this was a first. She had never tasted Durian before. Of course she had to try Durian…she is in Thailand after all.
She took a small bite. The look on her face was priceless. She looked puzzled at first because the taste was inexplicable and was like nothing she had ever tasted.
Next up was me. I had a slightly more violent reaction. My world went black and I was gagging. The taste was wild, foul, the smell was overwhelming. I wanted to vomit. But I did not……
We both decided – not, never, ever again.
It was a great cheesecake. I am sure the Thai people love it.
Try it at your own peril.
