There are few better ways to understand the sheer majestic scale of the Great Barrier Reef than from the air, and that's the perspective you get before touching down on this world-class four-mile-long sweep of white sand, reached via helicopter or seaplane. En route, keep an eye out for “Heart Reef”—a tiny, romantically-shaped coral outcrop marooned in some of the bluest water you'll ever see.
