'All good things are wild and free.' - Henri David Thoreau
Tell me about it! After a spontaneous encounter with a group of wild pilot whales, I would definitely sign that one.
Have you ever in your life seen anything more beautiful?
Encounter with Mother Nature
It´s been another fabolous sunny day and one of my friends asked me if I wanted to go on a boat trip.
Actually it wasn´t a boat but an impressive yacht but that´s another story.
After a 15 minutes sail leaving the South-Western coast at a distance of a few miles, we were there. We arrived at the coordinates where my friend had spotted some whales a couple of days ago. Since I had never seen any in my life, he decided to take us there once more.
Then they showed up right in front of me. I couldn´t breath!
Usually these guys dive down deep and don´t show up very often at the surface.
Here are some facts about pilot whales:
- There are two species: long-finned and short-finned (the here spotted is the last one).
- They are generally nomadic which means that they don´t stay long at one spot.
- Adult females reach a body length of about 5.5 m and males reach 7.2 m.
- They may weigh up to 3,200 kg.
- They eat primarily squid.
- Their feeding dives may last 10 minutes, being capable of diving to depths of 600 meters.
To me that was one of these experiences I will remember forever.
The rest of the day wasn´t too wild.
Moving to this outstanding place in the world was surely one of the best decisions I´ve ever made in my life. Living on an island surrounded by the Sea is a great gift.
I´ve never felt more alive.
Being close to the nature puts things into the right place. Next to these amazing creatures you feel tiny and unimportant.
Natures makes us humble.
Thanks for your valuable time and attention, I hope you enjoyed the read :)

All pictures were done by myself (original content).
Tiny? Yes. Unimportant? Yes. But, also loved.
Who else but you could know that :)
Yes, also loved.
Thanks for stopping by @htooms!
Nature makes us humble -- so true! I"m glad you got to see those whales. I've canoed in the Gulf of Mexico and had porpoises out front. But I've never seen a whale. Enjoy every opportunity in nature!
You are absolutely right. These opportunities are unique and absolutely fulfilling.
I go out there as often as I can.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughs :)
Wishing you a wonderful day @haphazard-hstead
That is a wild post - never watched whales apart from here on the platform :-) - thanks for the awesome report, loved reading it
Haha, me neither! But I can tell they are way wilder than the ones we have here on steemit :)
Thanks for your kind feedback, Uwe! I am happy you enjoyed it.
Wilder as a @smooth or @abit ? I am not sure how wild they can become lol - not having seeing them swim though
I´ve never met the two ones you mentioned, but I bet they can´t hold their breath for 10 minutes..:)
Great pics. I know some folks kayak out by the whales, but that would be too close for me lol.
Oh I wouldn´t haven been able to come closer either! :)
Besides all the beauty they are quite intimidating.
Thank you, I am happy you liked it.
Awesome pictures!
Thank you! It was also huge taking them :)
