Drone tracking Evolve Electric Skateboard - 30mph!

in #theflyingphotographer6 years ago (edited)

Hello all see the below video of Mavic Pro drone tracking Evolve Bamboo GTX Electric Skateboard. This is one of my favorite ways to explore nature on our local bike/hiking trails.
In this video, I demonstrate how each of the three ActiveTracking modes in the Mavic perform.

The three Active Tracking modes are:
Trace - This mode follows the subject, and can optionally circle the subject at varied speeds (user configurable). Notice how in the video, the drone automatically stops when I realize it is about to crash into a pole when flying backwards. I do an emergency stop (jump) off the skateboard, and the drone still keeps on me, then follows me back up the hill.

Spotlight - In this mode the drone hovers in place, and follows subject with camera/gimbal movements. This is a good mode when flying near light poles, trees, telephone wires.

Profile - In this mode, the camera follows along side, keeping with the subject. Notice the drone and skateboard have about the same max speed of 30 mph. Also see the drone start to spin in front a little as I slow down, then come back into place. The drone can also be positioned a little ahead or behind of subject and will attempt to stay near that same perspective during flight, even during speed changes.

This is my first attempt at creating a video with clips using Adobe Premiere after just a few tutorials. What a cool program!

Follow for more, including future off-road skateboarding with the All-Terrain wheels, and some examples of the steep hills this can climb!

Old guys can still carve! Now if I can just find a job close enough to ride it to work!

AWESOME! Simply Awesome!
Would have loved to have one while I was skateboarding....

Never too late... I'm 56 years old, and hadn't been on a board for over 30 years! It was what we always dreamed of back then, a powered board... Just had to do it, even if it's only for a year or two.

Good to hear! I´m 37.

I meant the drone. Would love to have some records of me and my board doing tricks in the funpark...

Oh! Yes, the tracking was awesome to be able to self-record. Spotlight mode would be great for following you in the skatepark. Looks like you're just a little far away from Denver for me to meet up and film you!

@hasenmann where in germany are you located? Maybe we can work something out! :)
@ksteem hope you don't mind if I could help him with my Mavic while trying out the tracking modes? Only used it a few times because I thought it wasn't that great. But in your movie it seems better than my try long time ago.

On the other hand you could try the Airdog? Maybe a fellow Steemian in your country has it @hasenmann!

The Airdog looks pretty cool, especially if you already have a gopro or other compatible camera for it. That certainly does look like good automatic following in that video (excellent btw!). If auto following, how did you get it to do the zoom out shots though? Was that from the same waterproof controller, or someone else controlling that part? I like the comparison you did, for me the only parts I like Mavic better for are the built in camera, and of course the battery life. I would be hitting that 15 minute wall pretty frequently on the Airdog.

Awesome. Resteemed and I now follow you because you like drones @ksteem. Feel free to drop my blog sometime as you seem keen on drones. Nice carving!

I posted my first ever drone vid this week! - but have not played with self tracking too much. Manually yes but nevertheless the sky, pardon the pun, is the limit.

Cool post and I look forward to seeing more of your drone videos!

Nice video, Love to see more of the Andes. Following you now as well. Recently joined a group of other drone lovers @steemitdronelove here on Steemit and Discord, take a look and join us!

Cool thanks for checking it out! I am now following @steemitdronelove (awesome name too).
Totally keen to participate. I have not yet explored Discord yet, but when I do I will look you guys up. Cheers!

Cool. Both the skateboard and the drone seem like fun toys to play around with.

Also, Premiere Pro is an awesome editing platform. Fairly user friendly to get started, but tons of in-depth features to learn.

Yes, I was amazed at all the advanced professional features in Premiere, but at how easy the simple things were. I spent less than an hour looking at a few tutorials, and was able to combine the clips, adjust the in and outs, add the transitions and titles.. It seems easy to make more professional looking captions and titles, but I was eager to get posted today.

cool post drone is genius....

Great video, thanks.

Really this video is amazing,I'm just thinking about the camera.
How it was able to take a cool video.

Thanks, yes these "intelligent" modes are amazing for doing self-videos like this one, but even more powerful to use with someone actively flying and using as an addition to live piloting. Just starting to learn them, can't wait to film some other live subjects.

@ksteem great to see the active tracking modes do workout. My attempt wasn't successful in the beginning of the year. Maybe I should try it again, while the days are still longer at this time so with plenty of light to track things.

Yes, this was my first time trying them, so I really don't have much comparison to judge other than this one day where all three modes seemed to work pretty well. One thing I did find from other posts was making sure that the flying backwards was enabled to enhance the tracking ability... I did try the "follow me" mode a couple days prior. That did not work at all for me. I think there may be a minimum height or distance requirement, and that supposedly uses GPS or signal following from the controller, doesn't seem to be as good from what I see others posting, and not at all for me. I may try again another day, but I think the active tracking is more what I will use regularly.
