Alcatraz Island
Hello, I travel many places with my career and have the opportunity to see some cool places. One of those places we all must know from history, being on Hollywood movies or television shows. When I found out I was going to San Francisco I knew I wanted to visit the island. Alcatraz prison is exactly as it appears to be in the shows we watch. Creepy, lonely and isolated. There is an allure though that makes it feel like a true bucket list item I could check off.
The tickets need to be prepurchased, and the state runs the tour program as it is a state park. The boat ride over is fast, as the buildings start to get closer, they become more familiar looking. The tour is self guided and they provide audio headphones. I took the walk the prisoners would walk when they arrived for the first time. Chilling, but cool. The cellblock, Birdman's cell, Al Capone's cell. Exactly like I remember it looked. The yard was so quiet and vacant, I could imagine the activity that once went on, fights, people seeing light for an hour of their life a day. Just amazing. I walked for 2 hours, took my time, looked over to San Francisco thinking, wow who would try to escape. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and visit to the island and thought the hours of my life were spent well.
I would recommend it to anyone who happens to be in the area, just pre-order the tickets.
