Photography Course - Week 1 - Apertures

in #thesteemengine6 years ago (edited)

I decided that I really ought to learn how to use my DSLR camera properly, so I booked onto a community photography course.

It is only 5 weeks long, but there are different stages that you can attend. I missed the introductory course, but managed to get on the 'Next Steps' course.

I was worried that I may have missed vital information from the intro lessons, but as it turned out I hadn't missed too much and he recapped anyway, so I managed to catch up fairly quickly.

The lesson was based around Apertures today. I love macrophotography so I tend to use a F2.8 or lower if I can as I love a nice blurry background! So today was right up my street.

Unfortunately, I had left my macro 1:1 lens at home (school boy/girl error) so I had to make do with my contemporary 18 - 300m lens. I had a lot of comments about how big it was haha

I learned how to manipulate an image using the exposure adjustment option on my camera, which is quite a cool thing to learn when you like taking arty shots.

The automatic mode will always assume you want to see everything in the shot and can sometimes overexpose everything, but if you control it yourself, you can make certain parts of the image as light or as dark as you want them to be.

The tutor had brought along a lot of random items as well as bright lights and torches to get us using our imagination on lighting up our subjects. Some were more creepy than others, I think he was still in Halloween mode...

This final image is my favourite, it reminds me of Christmas which is of course only around the corner! The sparkle adds a certain magic to the image.

These images were taken on week 1 of my photography course and I will post the images each week with a description of what we learn.

All the images here are my own and I used my Nikon D5300 and my 18 - 300mm contemporary lens.

I hope you have enjoyed the images, thank you so much for visiting!

Much love, BB xx

Oh how fun. I know I don't get the full effects from my DLSR because it's been at least 40 years since I was in any sort of class. I'm just jealous of you :)

Really nice images, and this class will lead to even greater images from you. Thanks for sharing them.

Thanks Big T, I really enjoyed it! It was unusual to focus on the light rather than what image I wanted to take, but can see a difference in the shots here to my usual shots, so it has opened my mind already and it is only week 1! :D

Isnt it so cool to learn the tricks of settings to improve your photos Aperture is very important in this regard :)

absolutely! It helps that the teacher explains it in a way that I can absorb the information too. I am not the best in a classroom setting, my mind tends to wander when I am bored or given too much information lol

LOl I can relate to that I am exactly the same thats why most of my learning with my camera has been a little online research but mainly trail and error

I when I started photography again went out witht he camera and would experiment with settings and then see what I got and eventually worked out what I liked ;)

Oh wow, these are nice shots... I don't know anything about photography, I point and click on the auto settings and hope that the subject is mostly in view and nothing weird is in the background (which there usually is...).

I'm going to be learning alongside you if you are going to keep posting these articles!

Sometimes the weird things in the background can make the shot! xD
I guess I really ought to write about the technical stuff as well in my posts, maybe it will help me to digest the information better too.
Yey, we can learn together! :DThank you @bengy!

Haha... I'll make sure I'll tell my wife that when I next take a photo of my little girl framed by two adult butts!

OMG, you didn't! haha

...yep.... I didn't notice until my wife pointed it out...

What a great idea. I did a photography course about 20 years ago, but the emphasis was mainly on developing your own photos. Unfortunately I haven't remembered much about that! I need a new camera, and if I get a DSLR, I will definitely do a photography course, though not about developing photos. I'll leave that to the experts!

I think the course is designed for people that are starting out but have a little experience in using their own cameras on auto setting, so it is perfect for me. I am sure there are many levels at which you can learn but the basics is best for me for now haha

Gorgeous shots! I just love the internet for being able to learn such cool things! A few years back I stumbled upon Open2study, an australian university that offered many online courses for free. I registered for photography and loved it!

I have tried a few online courses, but I really wanted a hands on class for this so I could ask questions about my camera and show them what I was doing so they could tell me what I was doing wrong and how to fix it. I really want to do an online photoshop course though, I love watching @ykdesigns tutorials! :D

It's good to have a refresher course. It helps to bring back what you knew and put everything in proper perspective. I envy you.

I have never learned photography properly before so this is all new to me! I think I will really enjoy the process though, even though I know it will be tough trying to remember everything as a lot of it is technical and I don't have a technical mind :)

You have been practicing photography so you wouldn't find the course difficult at all. That I can assure you.

Great photos!

Thank you so much! :)

Nice. It sounds like you learned some good tips! I've had my Canon DSLR for over 5 years now and I still just barely know the basics. lol.

I love looking at photography but I have never understood the technical side of it so I thought why not learn it properly! hehe

you have such amazing images!

so very well done!

Isnt it fun?

Thank you so much! :D I am happy you like them!
yes, it really was so much fun! I was surprised at how dark the room was, I always thought you needed lots of light for photography, but I like the effect it gives combined with the bright torches :)

You did a pretty good job with the unexpected lens. Were you on the other side of the room shooting these? XD

Haha xD Yes, You would think so wouldn't you! But I managed to get pretty close ;)

It's always fun to play with lenses, really need lots of practice though.

Yes, practice, practice! : D

Hahaha... Yes!

IMAGE SIZES!!!

oooops! Sorry! Give me 10 minutes I will sort it

This is an amazing Course. your presentation is wonderful. look forward for 2 week Course.

Thank you @ykdesign! I just need to learn how to you use photoshop now so watching all of your vlogs like crazy haha

Your photos look amazing! Thanks for sharing this with us! Have a great day!

thank you so much! :)

These photos are beautiful. Cool that you decided to attend a course. I should do it as well as sometimes I struggle to get what I want in the photo :)

Yea, I think it was getting to the point where I was frustrated as I knew what I wanted to achieve, but I didn't have the technical knowledge to make it happen. I think seeking guidance in that situation is always the best option! :)

Awwww I love the first picture!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

thank you so much! :D

That looks like a great course to go on and really help with your skills!

But we're not talking about Christmas yet oh no!! Haha, December 1st and only then :'D

haha once my birthday is done with, I get into Christmas mode! That is the law in my house! xD Which also means I am allowed to add whipped cream and marshmallows to my hot chocolate on an evening ;)

Haha! Well I ain't gonna argue with that seeing as I know how competitive you are now 😂

Hah I should also do this and learn how to use mine to the full potential as well :D What u mean by community course? is it in the physical class and you hav to go there? Or is it online? I hope to do it online on Coursera or Udemy. Just have to do my thesis defense first haha :D Then I'll have mkore time....btw that first picture is on fireeee! Totally love it, gr8 work!

Thank you so much! :D
The community course is a classroom course, but it is only for adults and it is held at a library instead of at college, although it is a college course. It is great as there aren't lots of people on it wither as it is during the day, so you get lots of time to ask questions

Nice! I totally love when full grown adult people continue learning and studying :) Good job! :)

Thank you 😁

Congratulations! This post has been chosen as one of the daily Whistle Stops for The STEEM Engine!

Really noce shots! I'd love to take a course one day too, but I'd need a better camera.. One day...! :D

I was only able to buy a camera because of steemit! Without this platform there is no way I could have afforded a new DSLR :)

wow, that's so cool! I still haven't gotten any "real money" out of steemit yet, still trying to grow my account, but I hope it comes one day! I was too late for those "golden days" of steem, but hopefully we will see it again one day :)
I am happy you got that camera :D

I understand the basics, but I don't think I have a grasp of them. Scott keeps telling me I do great and we already know I have a good eye for photography. Unfortunately, it's the frustration that keeps me from doing more with an actual camera. Plus I don't really want to step into his "space".

I may just learn right along side you as you post your photos. If that's okay.
Ren

Glad to have you along for the journey! :D

Woah, these are some really amazing shots! I don't own a DSLR, but would love to, someday and pick up some photography skills.

Thank you! So glad you like them :D

All the pictures looked good
This is really going to up your game
Very cool :)

Thank you! I hope it will help me improve my images 😁

Awesome shots! I'm so jealous! I miss playing with my DSLR. My little one keeps on insisting she take the pics. It's a struggle when I want her to be my subject. LOL

Haha yes that is quite an issue 🤣🤣
Thank you so much for dropping by and commenting 😀

What a great idea to share your lessons' pictures here and what you learned! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! 😁 It will be a good way for me to reflect back on my journey too I hope!

I love the colors photo...
Thank you for share

Thank you so much! :D

SO much to learn with photography. When I was young I experimented a lot, only to be told by my relatives, "Your camera takes good pictures!" Uh... no, I take the pictures. They never quite got it.

Proud member of #steemitbloggers

Very true. the camera is just a tool. You could have the most expensive equipment in the world, but it won't help make the picture better if you don't take a good picture in the first place! Some of the best images I have seen were taken on a mobile phone! :D
Thank you for your comment
BB <3

Like a boss ;)
You're a pro already :)

Awww you are too kind, thank you :)
BB <3

Hello very nice photos i also have a dslr and i want to do a photo course for ages because they are amazing cameras but it requires a bit of knowledge on how to uses them.

I would definitely recommend joining a course if you want to learn how to use your camera properly. It really is making all the difference to me! :D
BB <3

howdy beautifulbullies! it sounds like a wonderful course and the photos are great! The only problem is, since everyone knows you took the course they'll expect exceptional pictures from now on! lol. I don't think that's going to be a problem for you though. :)

Haha I hadn't thought of that...hmm perhaps I ought to say I quit the course just in case ;) hehe
Thank you for stopping by!
BB <3Hey @janton! :D

lol. you are very welcome beautifulbullies, you put out wonderful posts!

Ha ha! 'Halloween mode', I think some of us are there year-round! Those roses look fabulous and the last one yes! Let's get Christmas a coming! Are you happy you took the class?

awww thank you, I'm so pleased you like them!
Yes, I am really happy I took the class. I am quite excited for lesson 2 tomorrow. It has been a long time since I went to college, so I was nervous at first, but with it being an adult course, the pressure really is off because we are all in the same situation. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn something more about their hobby or passion!
BB <3

wow, great photo there

WOW! Those are fantastic photos! Look forward to finding out how week 2 goes! :)

Thank you so much! :D Just back from the week 2 lesson and my brain is fried haha I might have to write this one tomorrow after I have digested the information a little

Wow!!! What a fun class to take!~ Ill have to look around and see if there is something like this near me...

Your shots came out fantastic, great job!

Thank you Squishy! :D

You did some very cool pictures. The most I like is the one with the pencils.

Thank you so much :)

Hey @beautifulbullies wow! It does pay to take lessons to learn how to use a DSLR camera properly. I am thinking I should too. Now just wondering where I can squeeze a few extra hours!😂 Great shots by the way. I like the pencil one too!

Posted using Partiko Android

Thank you so much! :D Yes, it is hard to fit it in especially when you already have a busy schedule, but I am glad I have done it. And it is only a 5 week course, which makes it easier :)

Hi @beautifulbullies I love photography but I don't have a SLR camera... So I'm just making use of my conventional camera on my phone. I love your photos! Keep sharing quality post.. Thanks
