As I’ve been forced to slow down, and find myself getting restless, it's really been highlighting the choice I have to either further lean into distracting myself, or do something productive. It takes effort. Sometimes getting cheap dopamine hits from binge watching YouTube seems the way to go. That really doesn't leave me feeling built up however. If I’m honest with myself I feel more beat down after dopamine bingeing than I did when I started. Being in quarantine really challenges me in this area. If I start out my day gaming or scrolling youtube, I’m far less likely to do a more meaningful act later that requires more effort and doesn’t offer as much instant satisfaction. I feel overall better in my mind and even my spirit when I spend energy on something I find value in. And not just burn up my hours consuming mindless things. I can use this time to recalibrate my habits and discover what I truely find important and worth pursuing. But I first must recognize what’s just a silly distraction.
