Being a manager is not an easy job. I have a friend who works at a fast food chain in the Philippines who happen to be the Restaurant Manager.
I gained some insights from him. That I know will help everyone who is a leader and those who are aspiring to be one.
First thing you will encounter is: Adjustments
Adjustment to your Job, to the workplace and the people
One of the most challenging part being a manager is how to get the respect, with the people who been employed in the company longer than you.
Respect one another is one of the best approach. This enables everyone to do their job accordingly. With sense of responsibility and accountability.
Many leaders are really great at reading and understanding others. People skills are often seen as a trait of a leader. It’s true. You do need to be able to relate to others and inspire them to take action and grow.
Few things destroy relationships faster than broken trust. Trust builds teams. Period. If you don’t trust your team, then you don’t have a team! Without a team, there is really no need for a true leader.
The basis of trust is to give it freely. People usually rise to our level of expectations. If you don’t trust them, they tend to not let you down. They also don’t trust you either. Trust lives in that realm of reciprocity. You have to give it, to get it.
Leaders need to maintain focus and make adjustments to the pace. When things slow down that’s when true leaders kick in extra energy to keep the team on task and keep that momentum going.
I think all business problems are really people problems in disguise. I believe that 99 percent of people problems in restaurants are communication problems. Either lack of or just poor communication. A true leader denies themselves every day to communicate exactly what is expected and what the standards are, as well as meeting deadlines.
Most of the leader would say “Well, they should know that.” If they knew it, they would do it. Assumption is the cause of communication issues so we must avoid it.
And lastly your commitment to consistency works. It sets you apart from your competition. It positions you and your team to be dependable people, realizing far better results .
As a leader it may not that easy but the joy it brings when you get to meet your goal by working hand in hand can be a fulfilling job you could ever have.
