I QUIT

in #tilphilippines7 years ago (edited)

I must quit.

I told myself while pulling another cigarette from the box. This is my 16th stick for the day while hiding in the restroom of our 2-bedroom rented flat.

I was once a smoker. I smoke since I was 18 years old (out of curiosity on how it feels like) and stucked for years trying to quit but I ended up losing the battle. I lost count on how many times I tried quitting. There was one time I stopped for almost a month. I was happy, then someone really got me angry and I resorted to smoke again just to well, lessen my anger. Smoking has been my bestfriend for 14 years. It made me calm, my companion on my dark days even with the happy ones. No matter how sick it made me, (sore throats and coughs) and also for my pockets, I still smoked nearly a pack a day. I smoke from the moment I got up, during my lunch break at work and even before I slept. I was a prisoner of my own self. I tried everything I could just to stop the urge. Everytime I bought a pack, it made me feel I was at war with my inner self because I know I must quit but I couldn't control the urge. I have read tips on how to quit smoking, I even printed out some pictures about what smoking does to our body just to discourage me to no avail.

Then one day, I just woke up and I told my husband

I'm going to stop smoking for good.

He just nodded without looking at me, not even convinced with my decision. One of the few decisions that my father and my oldest brother supported (They used to smoke too. My father was the first one in the family who decided to quit smoking. His reason? He wants to live longer for his grandchildren then my brother was next. So the pressure was on me because I was the only one left in the family who smokes.) The first few weeks were hard. The cravings, the mood swings but my husband was with me all throughout. If I have the urge to smoke, I ate chocolates. Since then, it felt like I regain control of myself not the cigarettes anymore. The process was not easy and I didn't expect it to be easy as well, but it made me feel proud of myself. AN ACHIEVEMENT. I was happy to finally get rid of it. I started to gain weight too. A year after, with after so many years of trying to get pregnant, a faint heartbeat was starting to get stronger inside of me. That made me realize God has His own timing. Maybe He was really telling me to take care of myself first for me to take care of my little one.

To those who would like to try, please don't. To those who still smoke, PLEASE STOP not only for you but for your loved ones.

After smoking for most of my life, I quit about 18 years ago. It took several tries. What clinched it for me was that among other duties, I was welding. Because I smoked, I wore no mask, Helmet down, weld, helmet up, smoke .... by the time I went home, I was coughing up so much stuff I could have tarred my driveway. I finally managed with Nicorette. Then I was hooked on that, until I got mouth sores, but eventually I quit that also. The rest of the story is that after a recent health episode it was discovered that I had chronic bronchitis. My doctor said it was due to my smoking, even though I quit 18 years ago. So now I have a Duaklir inhaler which I have to take each morning. It is under control now.

glad you quit smoking

Nice to hear its under control now @thermoplastic How fortunate I am having only sore throats and coughs when I was hooked on cigarettes. Smoking really causes long-term effects. Wont try even a single puff anymore. :)

great post, i should consider quitting too

Thank you. You should. :)

Or just don't start to begin with... Wink...Cheers ;)

@ahhjoeinhk I noticed you said consider.. lol.. you won't quit .. to quit you have to make up your mind too. Don't wait until you are forced due to some health issue. You can quit once you make up your mind.

it is the plan

Great post and congratulations on quitting! Its not easy but then most worthwhile things aren't easy are they?

Thank you so much. yes, you're right. :)

Congratulations! My partner also smokes. He told me once that he already quit (to improve our chances of getting pregnant). After a few weeks, I noticed he started smoking again but tried to hide it from me. I was angry and confronted him about it. He cried and told me it was really hard to quit. I envy you for your courage and commitment. I hope my partner can also do it.

i understand your partner... so please understand him quitting smoke is not that simple.. i guess he need a hole in his lungs too like me! ;}

OMG! I hope it does not come to that.

I understand the part that it is hard. I want to help him in any way I can but he hides his struggles from me. I've talked to him about my concerns though. We are working things out and we can make it.

By the way, is that your actual lung or just a representation?

no!!! i just want to show what is the possible thing happen to us smokers! i don't have YET lung cancer or any lung decease, but even we already know what is the true outcome of this! it still hard to stop the addiction of nicotine! hope your partner and i find a way to stop this non sense smoking!!!

I was shocked looking at the photo! Good photo representation though.

I hope you will also quit just like the author. :)

You just need to be patient. It was really hard. The more you try the more it gets hard. I am praying he’ll quit soon. My regards.

Thanks for the advice and the prayer. I am probably the most impatient person, but I am really trying. It's hard for me but I'm sure it's harder for him.

No you’re not. He is not alone. There are smokers here who are struggling to quit. Everyday. Mine took years. You just need to stretch your patience. He needs that. 😘

Thanks. Will do my best to really stretch my patience. :)

Yes, sobrang hirap pero makakaya mo. Di gumagana sakin yung paunti unti. Stop ko lang sya bigla. Like paggsing ko di na ako nagyosi. Praying na mahinto mo din.

nagawa ko na rin yan last year 6 monts isang biglang tigil kaso nagkayakagan ang tropa mag inom taz pinagyosi ako ayun!!! hindi ko na ulit magawa! T_T

Oo. Pag inuman talaga lalong malakas sa yosi. Try mo lng iwas. Give urself one month. Manonotice mo una di ka masyadong hinihingal lalo na pag naglakad.

yup I used to smoke working in the hospital during breaks other nurses smoked so I got hooked need it esp during night shift but I also stopped when I got pregnant "cold turkey"

Thankfully we stopped mam. 🙂

My husband needs to read this. He smokes a lot and I don't. Very good reminder, @jovema .

Hi @bloghound. And yes because 2nd hand smoke is more dangerous.

They said, quitting from smoke is not really easy. My friend quit smoking from 6 years of being addicted to it. But, he came back after 2 years of overcoming it.

Thats sad. Thats why i dont try even a single puff. I might get hook again.

Congrats sis nalampasan mo, yung iba hindi talaga kaya iwan ang bisyong iyan.

Ty sis. Nkailang beses din. Hehe!

Glad you have managed to stop smoking sis. I know how hard it is for you to let go of that doing. However, the outcome is good. And congrats for making it successful. Other cannot do that.

Thank you very much sis. It was really hard pero self-fulfilling. Self discipline lang din. Lalo pa ngayon may tax na din tau dito. A friend of mine who smokes told me a pack of marlboro now is 20dhs. LOL.
