Time Jumps
I like to call them time jumps, when I have an idea that I want to become reality and it does.
Recently I had another one, it was amazing.
I remember the freedom I felt the moment I learned to ride my bike. I was about 5 or 6, living in a suburb of Houston, Texas. My brother was teaching me, that in itself was amazing, because my brother was and will always be my hero.
I remember when he let go, when I was in control of that two wheeled vehicle all on my own. I spent the rest of the day mastering every trick I could think of, no hands, standing up, and so on, the banana seat was like a surf board to me.
Most amazing was the memory of feeling free, trusted, and elevated to a new level of growing.
The responsibility of controlling my own destiny, the trust I knew was be given to me and the reward of me returning that trust with responsibility, by being safe and returning home.
Over the next few years as I passed from first grade through 3rd and 4th. My bike was my gateway to the world, i would explore and share explorations with friends. Riding fast or slow, feeling the wind in my face. It was the most amazing thing for me. At that moment.
When I first knew I wanted to be a father, besides all the visions of beauty and love and the excitement over what I would teach, I had one clear vision in mind, that when my child reaches that same age, around first grade, I wanted to be as amazing as my brother was to me, and give them that moment, to teach them, and set them free.
I call them time jumps, because I put those ideas in my mind, I solidify them with absolute intention, and then let them go. Then when they happen, even years later, that thought re-emerges, and all that time in-between compresses into a fraction of a second, and in memory it seems as if I just jumped through time to that very moment.
What made this one so amazing was that I knew, from experience, how to make it magical, so that wonderful memory could be passed on in tradition, and be the next level for my little angel’s independence and give her that feeling of freedom, trust, and path to responsibility that was so defining to me.
Learning to ride a bike, the feeling of flying, the freedom to explore the expanding world around her.
