Tiny House Episode 2: Framing

14.jpg

Framing a tiny house is much like framing a normal house just on a smaller scale. The only real difference is securing the house for transportation. The walls must be attached securely to the trailer and strapping or bracing must be installed to prevent the house from shifting. The extent of these measures will depend on what you have planned for your tiny house. Since we didn’t plan on moving frequently, and would only travel at relatively low speeds, less extreme measures could be taken. Some of the builds we came across in our research were designed to be towed around all over the place much like a travel trailer. In these cases, we saw extensive strapping all the way around the house or even cables attaching the roof to the trailer. Knowing how you plan on using the trailer will help you to determine how much strapping and other reinforcements you will need.

Don't be discouraged if you don't have a shop to build your tiny house in. We didn't even have a flat surface to build our walls on so we used the deck of the trailer.

9.jpg
Once the walls are erected bracing them well is important so they don't shift. Make sure to brace in all directions; something we forgot to do! Watch the video for more details.

12.jpg
Note the short lengths of 2x4"s used to prevent the wall sliding off the trailer as the walls are raised.

Make sure to have enough people to raise the walls safely. We got excited after building the first piece of wall and recklessly tried to raise it. As a result, the 200+lb. framing fell on my wife, Aimee's, foot and we had to make a trip to the emergency room.

We bolted the walls to the trailer and used several different types of strapping to prevent shifting.

Here the framing completed and under tarps for the rain!

I cover the framing process in greater detail in this video

Very innovative....loved it

I love seeing something like this... It gives me satisfaction, thanks sharing @canadianrenegade

You're welcome!

Very interesting. Love to watch tv show about building houses on trees. Love to watch anything about building that is not usual. Resteemed and upvoted.

Much appreciated! 🙂

I have also added the video in this blog post to Dtube.

Thanks everyone for your interest and support!

Finally! The tiny house movement is on Steemit. Seems like a doable project to try and tackle on your own. This could without a doubt help out many who are homeless, because the lack of affordable housing in now many parts of the world. Big developers definitely don't want to see this type of movement stick. Thanks for the great post.

No problem. Lack of affordable housing was one of our main motivations for this project.

Great job! I am going to follow you now. I want to see the progress of this house. We have been talking about doing the same thing but actually seeing someone do it really inspires us to go forward with it. upvoted and resteemed. Would appreciate the follow back.

Thanks for the follow. The support I have been getting is encouraging me to put even more effort into these posts!

This post was very informative thank you for sharing

Tiny house on wheels, nice!

This is awesome thanks for sharing these blogs. Keep up the great work.

Will do my best!

Have you seen anything about people framing tiny homes with steel instead of wood? A friend of mine said he'd be doing his in steel for increased strength to weight ratio and decreased weight and thus gas costs on transportation.

Welcome to Steemit, BTW!

~ Kevin

Thanks. Yes I have seen a few houses done this way and it probably is a superior way to frame a tiny house. Our decision to go with wood framing was mainly because I was confident I could do the work myself.

Oh yea, not knocking it at all! Super excited to follow the journey.

Helped a man in my work complex with his tiny home, the end result was amazing. If anyone is discouraged from building their own tiny home, the man I'm talking about did it with no prior knowledge or experience just a little help from friends from time to time. Anyways love how yours is coming along, once you get it all shelled in you can take your time since weather will no longer be an issue.

That's great. Even though I am in the roofing industry I learned a ton about construction by building this tiny house.

We are actually living in this house now. I documented everything as we went along but didn't have the time to blog about it during the build.

nice post my friend

You can travel all over and see the sights in the comfort of home.

Our tiny house is actually a bit big and heavy to move frequently but the beauty of tiny homes is they can be designed to meet the individual needs of the builder/owner. So if someone did want that lifestyle they could build a tiny house that was easier to tow.

Your channel looks pretty cool seems like your goals are very similar to ours. I followed and will have to check out some of your posts when I have more time.

Thank You! I see it would be a bit heavy to tow for long distances. We are reusing an old office trailer and making it a small home. It is a work in progress.

This is definitely something I want to do for myself one day. Would love to find some land in Florida or somewhere on the west coast and do this.

In areas of North America with mild winters it might be better to just buy a good used travel trailer/fifth wheel and customize it to fit your needs. The main factor that pushed us over the edge to build a tiny house was our severe Canadian winters. Even four season RV's aren't built for the type of cold we have here.

Interesting

Nice Work. Tiny house sure are neat, but not for me!!!

Yes, they are definitely not for everyone.

Nice concept building @canadianrenegade. Great work..

Good job...interesting story..

That had to be tough framing a small house on a trailer. Uber impressed with how you guys did it though.

It was a little awkward but I made do. Raising the walls was probably the hardest part.

The present idiocracy running Vancouver, and B.C. say Tiny Houses are not a solution!
I hear there is a town in Quebec where they've made a place for them.....

In most rural areas you can get away with it because a lack of enforcement. Idiocracy is right, they have done a great job of making housing unaffordable especially in Vancouver.

Very nice photos. Thanks for sharing. My husband and I are getting ready to build our first tiny home here in California. It will be interesting to follow your progress. Happy Building. You can check us out here. https://sth.itallmatters.net/

Thanks for sharing I am interested to see how it turns out!

a very smart ideas..how long did you use to finish?

Which part?

lay out and cutting the lumber...

It took me about 2 days of work to cut, lay out and fasten the walls. Also 1 day to erect the walls. 1 day to do the roof. And 1 day during the planning stage to diagram everything so I would know what I was doing.

AWESOME. i dream of running away in my tiny house! keep it coming, i want to see what happens next!

shame about Aimee's foot too, looks sore :-(

Aimee saw this comment and said it was nice that someone cared about her foot. Thanks.

Congratulations @canadianrenegade!

Looks like it's going to be pretty sweet. Make sure to post again when it's finished. I want to see it. : ) I imagine this probably helps you get around some annoying building regulations since it's not a permanent structure, yes?

Not being constrained by building codes is a nice bonus.

cool friend how to make a house like that.
with a unique and great material

Eventually, we will be building a tiny cottage on our land, 288 sq ft, including second story. Won't be on wheels though. No desire to tow it. I want to be like my garden, planted somewhere!

That sounds great. One of the reasons we decided to build on a trailer was that local building codes prohibit new houses under 800 sqft. I think we may have gone for a permanent structure also if that wasn't the case.

Good luck with your tiny home build. I am about to interview (for my podcast) a tiny house owner who is selling hers right not to downsize even more. Will be fun to follow your story!!

Keep up the good work!

Tiny house is pretty good for a business

This is so exciting to watch. I have a friend who just completed her tiny house on wheels. It's much smaller than yours. She worked on building it herself for almost two years in her off time. I helped her some (we live in different states) an I learned a lot in the process. I'm gonna follow you and watch your progress.

Thanks! I came across your post on acorns and oak trees in the homesteading section before I read this and followed you also.

Great minds must think alike 😉

Haha, what a ca-winkie-dink.
