证觉寺历史悠久，据志书载：“历史悠久之太平山属闽北名山，古刹证觉乃镛州胜地。寺创自唐初武德三年，辟丛林而始建精舍，历劫火而赤地徒存。实诚跨全省之名胜，甲上游之大观者矣。山楼苔遍，法象尘封。元代丘圩，明朝定鼎，元璋君相，曾驻跸舆。
