La Mesa de Esnujaque.
The Tribe of the Esnujaques for the year 1595-1600 is already mentioned in those days when Sancho Briceño Graterol by order of the Crown fulfills the task of enslaving the natives of this land of the Trujillan Andes, which was not only dominated by force but also with the imposition of a strange faith brought from the other side of the ocean and that for these places it was entrusted to the Religious José Vílchez y Narváez who had the responsibility of catechizing not only the Esnujaques but each tribe of these sides of what Today we know how Trujillo state.

Along with the Esnujaques were reduced the Jajoes, Quicoquis, duries and the Mapén forming in principle this Partiality that was administered from a geographically centric site and that gave origin to the town of Jajó in the year 1611.

In these first years of Encomienda it is interesting to refer to the difficulty that the Spaniards had with some caciques such as the case of "Esnujaque" who confronted the "Men on horseback" until he was killed giving perhaps in this aspect greater strength to the conquest in this area that not only saw resistance in this cacique but also in the other tribes that inhabited this area; but that unfortunately they could not face the thundering of the arquebus.

The year of 1687 is like that of the "Foundation" of La Mesa de Esnujaque by the encomendero Diego Jacinto de la Mesa ... Some mistakenly claim that his name is partly due to this man's surname without taking into account that the town is based on a "table" or "plateau" or "Altiplano" so I particularly conclude that it is more reasonable to relate this geographical feature and its first inhabitants, the tribe of the Esnujaques, with the name of this town: The Mesa de Esnujaque .

The Mesa de Esnujaque was elevated to Parroquia in 1738, under the pontificate of Clemente XII ... It was a time when the Province of Venezuela was subject to the Audeniencia of Santo Domingo and the Viceroyalty of Santa Fe de Bogotá.
