Such groups exist to fleece unsavvy sheep. If a group announces a pump, that means they have been quietly accumulating the coin they're going to "pump" for the past week or two. The actual pump involves a few large buys to bump the price, before the group proceeds to dump the coin they accumulated for cheap on anyone who tries to get onboard thinking they can make a quick buck.
