As a school teacher for many years, I've had opportunities to interact with pupils /students from pre-school to Senior Secondary School. Whether in the east, west, south or north, one common trait I see these future leaders display is 'attitude '. Oftentimes, as I talk with a parent about his/her child's behaviour at school, I'll hear something like, " That's how he/she behaves at home ".
I currently teach in a Primary school. Something happened, and has happened on some other occasions in the past; in the course of teaching, sometimes I'll mention a particular political or prominent figure's name in our country. A pupil (s) from another geo-political region will react in anger or obvious resentment. At times, I'll have to ' settle ' these youngsters of less than 10 years old on matters of religion and politics. You ask, ' But why are you discussing religion and politics with kids? ' I'm not. Religion and Political Party are mentioned in some subject topics. You'll hear kids yelling, "I hate PDP ', ' I hate so and so '.
Times have changed. In our days as youngsters, NPN, NPP, GNPP, UPN or whatever political party there was at the time meant nothing to us. The political leaders too, meant nothing to us. Infact, in my village, we know the parties by their symbols, e.g. house and corn, umbrella, broom etc.

How will kids learn to hate a party or so and so, except they've overheard their parents and or other adults say certain things or express certain feelings. Parents should be careful about matters they discuss or emotions they display when kids are around. There's a campaign going on against hate speeches across our country, Nigeria but how effective can it be if the home front is not properly taken care of ? There's a saying that goes, ' Charity begins at home ' . These youngsters are the future leaders and we shouldn't allow them to grow up filled with anger, bitterness, resentment and animosity. Otherwise, the future is endangered.
In conclusion, the Holy Book says, " Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it ". Parents should train their kids to love and always emphasize on oneness, unity and harmony. Political Party and religion shouldn't turn us against each other.

Thanks for taking out time to read.
You have spoken well. A child's training starts from home. Parents should compliment teachers effort
