Kandy to Ella by train

We drove from Dambulla through the hills to Kandy. Driving a tuk tuk on the roads that wind themselves through the mountains is terrifying but beautiful. Breaks on tuk tuks are non-existent so when you have a fully laden one rolling down busy, step roads with sheer drops either side it makes for exciting driving.

Once your free of the traffic and steep roads you get some amazing unspoilt views with plenty of space to pull over and take them in.

We planned to take the train from Kandy through the tea plantations to Ella. There are three classes when traveling on the train. First class, second class and third class. First class guarantees you a seat in an airconditioned carriage. Second and third however does not. It became very apparent that second class was the wrong choice. Westerners who travel on the train all seem to go for second class, which means there is no space. So a lot of passengers where standing. Third class seemed like the place to be, there was always plenty of space.

Whilst traveling through the tea plantations you get epic views of hills with patchworks of tea plants. Waterfalls and streams. The doors of the carriages are always open. I would recommend taking the time to sit next to the open door to take in the views and fresh air.
