Glacial lake in the Julian Alps, north-west Slovenia. It covers an area of 1.44 km². The lake was formed in an old tectonic hollow at the end of the last ice age as a result of the melting of the great Bohinjski Glacier. At present, no larger over-ground watercourses enter the lake, and water is supplied mainly by efficient underground sources. In the western part of the lake there is a small island called Blejski Otok with a well-known pilgrimage church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is green, covered with trees and shrubs hides a belfry, a church, a presbytery, a small loneliness. There are a lot of legends about the island.
