The inevitable city you can not skip when you're on your backpackers journey, it's the number one arrival and departure port for most tourist visiting Southeast Asia. That's why most of Bangkok's old city streets (Around Rambuttri and Khao San Road) will be packed with typical tourists in elephant pants and short tops. But don't get me wrong, Bangkok is one of the most beautiful cities in the world!
There's a lot to do in Bangkok, but don't overestimate the time you will need to see the top and most interesting sights. We stayed for one week and were done with all the sightseeing after 3 days. So do some preresearch for what you want to see and always plan ahead 😛.
I will give you guys a brief top 5 sights which I thought were pretty impressive and which would be really worth a visit:
1. The Grand Palace, this is the most visited sight in all of bangkok so beware of the crowd. You can't get in if you're wearing any short pants, so buy one for 120 baht at the gate(= € 3) or bring one yourself. (It's really fkin hot so beware) Entrance fee is 500 baht (= €12,50), in my opinion a little too expensive but we did it anyway. Worth it! Really beautiful and a must do when you visit bangkok.
2. Wat Pho, this is the oldest and biggest temple in Bangkok. My personal favourite. It is home to over a thousand individual buddha statues and best of all an astonishing 15m high and 46m long laying buddha illustrated in its descent. It is also be said to be the birthplace of the worldknown traditional Thai massage. So if you want to enjoy a good and cheap backrub this is the place (Entrance fee is 100 baht).
3. Lumpini park, this park is similar to the NYC's central park, but quite smaller. It's a nice place to spend your afternoon sipping on some cold juice and enjoy the peace away from the chaos, tourists and crowd bangkok is so known for, located in the middle of the business district it's a slice of heaven you have to experience. Just rent a bike (which I really recommend) near Khao San rd and you can see much more of the city than by foot or tuk tuk. (Which is really expensive and usually a scamming technique).
4. Wat Ratchanadda, this quite temple isn't that impressive in comparison to the other Wats in the city but it lays of a really chill vibe, which I really liked, and gives some interesting information about meditation techniques. You can also visit several different levels in the temple which is quite unique.
(Me on the highest floor of the temple with in the background the golden mountain)
5. Chinatown, not too far away from Khao San rd is Bangkok's Chinatown. You can experience a whole other aspect of the city when you visit this place. It's a perfect recommendation for a evening dinner, because the food here is amazing.
Bangkok is home to some of the most amazing and surprisingly beautiful sights in Thailand. Not only that but the nightlife is also too crazy for words. If you are planning to visit the city don't forget to turn off your mind for one night and head right down to the business centre for some heavy partying, I can assure you you will have an experience you will remember for the rest of your life ;)
