Welcome to the third post from Croatia! This time I take you really high. The way up there is really dangerous. Our aim is located 1762 m.a.s.l. That's the second highest mountain of Croatia - Sveti Jure. It is part of the Biokovo mountain range. It is located along the Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic Sea.
The trip to the peak of Sveti Jure needs to start very early optimal about 6 a.m, for sure not later than 8. It is important from two reasons. First, the sun - it is very strong that high. Second, buses - first of them start to arrive there about 8.45 - 9.00. The both reasons are equally important. The sun is actually so dangerous there that the best is just wear long pants and shirt with long leaves. And, the bus is the least thing which you want to meet on your way up, when you can't pass it immediately and you need go back to let it pass you. The road to the peak of the Sveti Jure is very narrow. Actually so narrow, that passing by is possible only on the special islands, which are placed not so often. If you want to check it by yourself, just watch my movie at the end of this post.
Driving up takes about 1,5 h. The road is ca. 24 km long, but maximal speed there is 20 km/h. You need to drive very slowly, even a small mistake can cause accident. There accident can mean fall about 1 km down. I was feeling sick during that travel. In some moments I was even regretting that we got the idea to go there. Fortunately the view from the top has totally paid it off. It was simply stunning!
At the top of Sv. Jure is located a television tower and the building of telecommunication devices, and the church of St. Jura. The FM and DVB-T transmitter is really powerful. The current church of St. Jura was built in 1968 in place of the previous church of St. Jura, which was probably built immediately after Christianization. It has probably existed there in the 12th century. Also plants which grow there looks really different than this which we can meet in lower regions (examples presented in the video at the bottom of the post).
The national park Biokovo offers also other view points like visible above Ravna vlaška. This place is located 1228 m.a.s.l. There we can find the information center in the summer months. It offers promotional materials and information about the park. Here you can find also the group of chamois. They are completely lovely. In other points of the park is possible to meet horses, even directly on the road.
Is it actually worthy to take a risk and drive there up? The answer is YES! The view is incredible! Also the drive there up and down is not forgettable experience. If you are somewhere around, you should definitely wake up one day very early and go there (of course if you feel that you can make it and don't have acrophobia).

Whoa - that trip looks stunning!
I'd love it, but my wife is afraid of heights. I'd probably have to chloroform her and put her in the trunk to get her to the top of that mountain!
Are there hiking trails for people who want to climb it on foot or do people just walk the road as well?
