Bangkok in a nutshell
With Bangkok it’s the same as with liquorice - either you love it or you hate it! The first time I was in Bangkok I had a really bad start - I was 19 years old at that time, arrived some days later than my friends and had no clue where they were staying and literally no taxi driver was either speaking English or at least understanding Google Maps. So I was lost in a city with millions of people! But after this crisis was solved I absolutely fell in love with Bangkok!
People who hate it most times do so because it’s dirty, loud, hot and packed! But I really enjoy all of these things because my hometown Munich is the complete opposite, except for being packed, so it’s new and exciting to me. Bangkok has so many activities to offer, you could stay there for years and not see the same bar twice. Big concrete skyscrapers next to golden buddhist temples, fancy bank buildings next to the red-light district and expensive sushi restaurant next to street cookshops - for me it’s a city of contrasts - but in the end yet “Same same but different”!
Sightseeing
Wat Pho
Wat Pho is one of the most popular temples in Bangkok and my most favourite one. The temple complex is really broad so you can wander around for hours. The complex feels like a botanical garden with lots of bonsai trees, water basins, pavilions and many different Buddha statues in between.
The main attraction is a huge golden statue of the reclining Buddha located in one of the biggest viharns - which is a hall built on the temple complex.
There is also a school for traditional medicine in Wat Pho where you can take courses in the art of Thai massages.
Grand Palace
The biggest palace in Bangkok is by far the Grand Palace. When you get off the taxi or tuk tuk you will still have to walk at least 10 minutes to get to the entrance as the district is closed for public transport. When we arrived at the entrance I felt like entering the Vatican in Rome. There were guards everywhere controlling the visitors for dangerous goods and appropriate clothing. We were prepared for that, but we were not aware of the masses of tourists inside. There were so many you couldn’t even stop walking for a second as the mass was pushing forward. Another 10 minutes later we arrived at the ticket counter and were asked to pay 600 Baht for the entrance which was like 16 Euros by that time. Some halls need a guided tour on top so we decided to not go inside and just walked around the complex.

Mit Bangkok ist es das gleiche wie mit Lakritz - entweder man liebt es oder man hasst es! Als ich das erst mal in Bangkok war hatte ich echt einen schlechten Start - ich war damals 19 Jahre alt, kam ein paar Tage später als meine Freunde an und hatte keinen Schimmer in welchem Hotel sie waren und wirklich kein einziger Taxifahrer konnte Englisch sprechen oder Google Maps lesen. Also war ich verloren in einer Stadt mit Millionen von Menschen. Aber nachdem diese kleine Krise überwunden war habe ich mich absolut in die Stadt verliebt!
Leute die Bangkok hassen tun dies meistens, weil es dreckig, laut, schwül und überfüllt ist! Ich mag jede dieser Eigenschaften, weil in meiner Heimatstadt München genau das Gegenteil der Fall ist, abgesehen von den Menschenmassen, also fühlt sich alles neu und aufregend an. Bangkok hat so viele Aktivitäten zu bieten, man könnte dort Jahre verbringen und nicht zweimal die gleiche Bar zu Gesicht bekommen. Große Beton-Wolkenkratzer neben goldenen buddhistischen Tempeln, schicke Bankgebäude neben dem Rotlichtviertel und teure Sushi Restaurants neben Garküchen - für mich ist es eine Stadt der Gegensätze - aber am Ende ist doch alles “Same same but different”!
Sightseeing
Wat Pho
Wat Pho ist einer der bekanntesten Tempel Bangkoks und mein Favorit. Die Tempelanlage ist wirklich weitläufig sodass man stundenlang herumlaufen kann. Die Anlage wirkt wie ein botanischer Garten mit vielen Bonsai Bäumen, Wasserbecken, Pavillions und dazwischen vielen verschiedenen Buddhastatuen.
Die Hauptattraktion ist eine riesige goldene Statue des liegenden Buddhas, die sich in einem der größten Viharas befindet - einer Halle in der Tempelanlage.
In Wat Pho gibt es auch eine Schule für traditionelle chinesische Medizin, wo man in Kursen die Kunst der Thaimassage erlernen kann.
Königspalast
Der größte Palast in Bangkok ist bei weitem der Königspalast. Wenn man aus dem Taxi oder Tuk Tuk aussteigt muss man immer noch gut 10 Minuten zu Fuß bis zum Eingang laufen, da die Straßen um den Palast für öffentlichen Verkehr gesperrt sind. Als wir am Eingang ankamen kam ich mir vor, als würden wir den Vatikan in Rom betreten. Überall waren Wächter, die die Besucher auf gefährliche Gegenstände und angemessene Kleidung überprüften. Darauf waren wir vorbereitet, aber wir hatten nicht mit den Massen an Touristen innerhalb der Mauern gerechnet. Es waren so viele, dass man nicht einmal für eine Sekunde stehen bleiben konnte, weil die Masse einen vorwärts drückte. Weitere 10 Minuten später erreichten wir den Ticketschalter und sollten 600 Baht Eintritt bezahlen, was zu dem Zeitpunkt 16 Euro entsprach. In einige Gebäude durfte man nur mit Tourguide hinein, der zusätzlich kostet, also haben wir beschlossen nicht hinein zu gehen und die Anlage nur von außen zu betrachten.

I loved Bangkok! It's giant so everyday we found something else to do it visit.
