The Holy City of Varanasi, India

in #travel7 years ago

Happy Friday Steemians!

Today we are travelling to India. More specifically to North India. The city is called Varanasi which lies on the banks of Ganges, the holy river of India (also one of the most polluted in the world).
It is located in Uttar Pradesh which is one of the states of India. Varanasi is a main hub for Hinduism and played a huge role in the development of Buddhism.

We travelled there from Nepal which was one of the most horrible journeys of my life. Taking the train in India is a must have experience, you will never forget. At least it is very cheap, you can get a ticket for less than a $ for an 8-hour journey.
We spent just a few days in Varanasi but it was truly unforgettable. The city is full of cows, as most of India, the walls of the buildings are decorated with Hindi paintings.

The streets are full of food stalls and roadside coffee shops. They are always cheap and fun to watch how they prepare the stuff. Usually it is safe to eat as well. I never had any issues and my fiancee only had one rough night in six months.

All in all visiting Varanasi is an amazing experience, it was definitely a culture shock for us and after visiting a place like this I started to look at the world differently.

Thank you for sharing ! Your pictures are very beautiful. I hope return in India one day to visit Varanasi and the north (I have already visited southern India).
I have Upvote & resteem your post and I follow you now :)

Thank you! India is amazing. I love the south as well, it is definitely more relaxed there and not as hard work as the north. But you have to see both...

Yes, I'm convinced of that. I have seen many beautiful things in the south, but the north calls me (Varanasi, Jodhpur, Agra and many others). I hope I can get there someday.

Do go and take a train from the south to the north. Thats gonna be something special. Just make sure you are not travelling when its foggy, unless you are prepared to be delayed by days :))

I took the train from Ooty to Mettupalayam, it was already nice (although tourist). Travelling by train with the locals must be a great experience :)

Beautiful pictures! I've visited India many times and each time has been a unique and enjoyable cultural experience. The Delhi belly aside of course.
