I am new to this, and I have only just begun my research for traveling with our little guy. We have two plane rides planned with him this year , one to North Carolina when he is about 8 months old, and one for Hawaii right before his 1st birthday.
I feel I have compiled some pretty good tips and wanted to share them here!
1). Spring for the extra seat I owe this one to my sis-in-law. If you aren't traveling with any baby older than a newborn, you might want to get the seat. Children who want to move around, crawl or walk understand their car seat is for sitting, they are trained this way, so they will be more apt to stay put and even sleep if you have them in their own seat.
2). Feed on take off and landing This is to avoid painful ears when the pressure changes.
3). Pack a grab bag of new goodies Pack one for the way there, and don't forget about one for the way home! Include new (never seen by baby) toys, snacks, books, and if they are older games/movies/shows on an iPad or laptop. This will keep them entertained for hours. *TIP: avoid letting children who are walking to run the aisles until the end of the flight, otherwise that's all they will want to do the whole time!
4). Early board Take advantage of early boarding to get everyone situated and secure overhead space,
5). Carry on for kids Remember, everyone is entitled to a carry on, this includes little ones! Use it for that special grab bag of goodies I mentioned earlier.
6). Buy some helpful products Here are a few that have been recommended to me!
This strap turns a car seat into an easy way to transport both it, and baby throughout the airport!
The Bebamour Lightweight Baby Toddler Hip Seat Carrier makes carrying little ones up and down the aisles or out and about during travels a breeze
For children of all ages, use these fun Cozyphones Headphones that won't hurt ears while they watch movies or shows
