Visiting Mérida without going up to the Mukumbarí cable car, is something like visiting Rome without going to the Vatican or Paris without going to the Eiffel Tower. This cable car, which consists of 4 sections, is the longest and highest in the world. In fact it travels 12.5 km and reaches an altitude of 4765 meters above sea level. That is a few meters less than Mont Blanc, the highest point in Europe, and higher than any point in the United States (excluding Alaska).
The first section leaves the Barinitas station (1577 masl), in the city of Mérida, and arrives at the La Montaña station (2422 masl). You can see a beautiful view of the city and in front you can see the "giant asleep", that mountain with the shape of the face of a giant lying down, looking up.
The second and third sections arrive at the stations of La Aguada (3452 m.s.n.) and Loma Redonda (4045 m.s.n.m), respectively. During this journey, you will see the valleys of Mérida, and upwards you will see the Bolívar peak, the highest point in Venezuela.
At the Loma Redonda station you will begin to feel the height and the cold. It's already over 4000 meters! Remember to walk slowly to accustom your body to the height. It can also be a good time for a hot chocolate.
When you get to the top and leave the station, head towards a viewpoint where there is a statue of the Virgin of the Snow from where you can see Pico Bolivar opposite and to the sides the Picos Humboldt and Bomplant. Bolivar peak is very close, however to arrive you need 6 hours, be trained and in perfect physical condition.
Do you dare to visit this beautiful place? come to venezuela that has many beautiful landscapes.
