Hello, Steemians!
Another day, another part of the probably long series of Corfu Island Holiday. Welcome to the third day we spent on Corfu. This time, we went to Achilleion (also known as Sisi Castle) and to Corfu Town, the oldest village on the Island.
Achilleion is a palace built in Gastouri, Corfu by Empress of Austria Elisabeth of Bavaria, also known as Sisi. Elisabeth was a woman obsessed with beauty and very powerful, but tragically vulnerable since the loss of her only son, Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria in the Mayerling Incident in 1889. A year later in 1890, she built a summer palace in the region of Gastouri, now the municipality of Achilleion, about ten kilometers to the south of the city of Corfu (The Corfu Old Town).
In the huge yard around the castle there were many statues and art operas, but the most imposing one was the Statue of Achilles surrounded by a lot of big palm trees.
Next on our list was Corfu Town. There were a lot of places to visit and that day we managed to see the Old Fortress of Corfu and some beaches around. The Old Fortress was a huge construction with big walls, prisons under the ground, old defensive weapons and an extraordinary view.
Here on the left you can see a part of the Fortress.
As we were walking to the fortress we stopped to a viewpoint from where we could see a small bay with its classic boats and yachts.
Between the Town and the Fortress there was a channel and you had to walk on a bridge to get to the entrance gates.
After a long period of walking up the hill, we started to see the beautiful town and the sea from high points.
Where you see those big ships, that is the biggest harbor on the island where all the transport and cruise ships were staying.
Finally we arrived at the top od the Old Fortress and as you can see the view overpaid itself for the effort we put to get there. It was spectacular. We stayed for a long time there.
