Dear Steemians,
today I'd like to share my impressions about a very special place on Madeira.
First let me tell you some facts about the island:
- The island of Madeira has a surface area of 459 square miles (741 km2), (35 miles long and 13 miles wide).
- Madeira is 310 miles from the African coast and 620 miles from the European continent, which is the equivalent of a 1 hour 30 minute flight from Lisbon, Portugal. Right in the Atlantic Ocean.
- Madeira is called the "Island of Flowers", because there are about 2000 different plants and flowers growing and blooming on the island
- Because of their privileged geographical position and mountainous relief, Madeira has a surprisingly mild climate. Very mild average temperatures, 22ºC in the summer and 16ºC in the winter
- The seawater temperature is also very mild, because of the influence of the warm Gulf, presenting averages of 22ºC in the summer and 18ºC in the winter.
Some weeks ago I visited the island for the first time. As you know, I'm a beachlover always looking for some special beach locations around the world.
But unfortunately Madeira hasn't that typical beaches. The sands are black because of the volcanic remains and the water is really rough. Perfect for surfers but not for taking a bath though.
That's why I have become attentive to the natural saltwater pools "Doca do Cavacas".
It's a really breath taking place!
The natural swimming pools are formed by volcanic lava, naturally filled with crystal-clear sea water.
If you like to swim in the sea but are afraid because the water is too rough, you should definitely visit a saltwater pool like that!
Saltwater pools are like small dams that are installed directly in the sea to allow safe swimming. The special thing about it is that it feels as if you bathe directly in the sea. The rocks are low enough to let fresh sea water in so you can feel the waves.
There is also a great beachbar, where you can get some great Mojitos and fresh Fish.
Doca Do Cavacas is definitely worth a visit! For 4 euro entrance incl. sunbed and umbrella it's a really cheap adventure!
